Apache Ladies win Region XIV regular season championship

The Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies are league champions.

The women's basketball team won the Region XIV regular season title after scoring an 87-66 win over Coastal Bend College on Saturday in Beeville.

TJC (26-4) won the conference with a mark of 16-2, one game ahead of Trinity Valley and Angelina, both 15-3.

Along with winning the league, the Apache Ladies are the No. 1 seed in the Region XIV Tournament, which begins on Wednesday at Centenary College's Gold Dome in Shreveport, Louisiana.

TJC will play either Coastal Bend (4-26, 3-15) or Paris (5-25, 3-15). Those two teams will play at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Shreveport for the right to advance to the tournament as the No. 8 seed.

"Women's rules say a team can't be eliminated from the playoffs due to a tiebreaker," said Dr. Tim Drain, Region XIV's NJCAA women's representative. Thus, the winner of the tiebreaker will play TJC at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Other quarterfinal games on Wednesday include: No. 4 Kilgore College vs. No, 5 Panola, 3 p.m.; No. 2 Trinity Valley vs. No. 7 Blinn, 6 p.m.; and No. 3 Angelina vs. No. 6 Bossier Parish, 8 p.m.

Te'Aire Hambrick, a freshman from LaPoynor, led the Apache Ladies against Coastal Bend with 31 points, including seven 3-pointers.

Kennedy Burks added 20 points, including 16 in the first half. Others scoring for TJC were Felmas Koranga (15), Trelynn Tyler (5), Kharisima Brown (4), Frankazia Boyd (4), Kierra Brimzy (4) and Erica Powell (4).

Jada Mitchell led the Lady Cougars with 14 points with Cassie Hogan (12) and Emiko Hemphill (11) also in double figures.
