Aggies Take Two Games From Cougars

Beeville, Tx- On Friday, February 1st, The Coastal Bend Baseball Program faced visiting Murray State College for a nine inning ball game. The Cougars were looking to bounce back after a loss to Wharton County Junior College on Tuesday. 

The Aggies would score first in the top of the third inning with runs off of CBC. After another scoreless inning, the Aggies would ring up four runs to lead, 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning.  The Cougars were able to get a run on the board when Catcher, Cooper Coe scored in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sacrifice RBI from Second Baseman, JB Trees. Starting Pitcher, Marco Becerril would pitch four innings for the Cougars before being relieved. Left Handed Pitcher, Will Lennon entered the game in the fifth inning to relieve Becerril. Lennon pitcheda scoreless frame for the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Murray State would score two more runs to increase their lead. CBC Left Handed Pitcher, Josh Mendez replaced Lennon on the mound for the seventh inning. Mendez pitched two innings allowing only two hits while striking three batters CBC Right Handed Pitcher, Ricky Garcia saw action on the hill, as he entered the game in the eighth inning to relieve Mendez. CBC Pitcher, Christian Isenhour entered the ball game in the ninth inning to replace Garcia.

The Cougars only produced one run, losing by a score of 8-1. CBC produced six hits on the night. 


Saturday, CBC would host Murray State for another nine inning game, for an early afternoon affair. The Cougars would start, Bo Gonzales on the mound versus the Aggies. 

Coastal Bend would get the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning with a Solo Home Run from Catcher, Ronnie Bailey. A few batters later, Shortstop, Brett Copeland would reach first base after getting hit by a pitch. Right Fielder, Kyler Bumstead entered the batter's box for CBC with two outs. Bumstead would hit a pitch to deep center field, where the Aggies would cause an error. Copeland would score on the play, leaving Bumstead at second base. A line out was recorded for the final out of the inning for Coastal Bend. The next score in the ball game would come from Coastal Bend, when Center fielder, Kody Kolb hit a Solo Home Run to put the Cougars up, 3-0. In the top of the fourth inning, Murray State would score four runs to take the lead. Pitcher Bo Gonzales would be relieved by Luis Martinez. Moving ahead in the ball game following back to back scoreless innings from both teams, Martinez pitched two and third of an inning, recording five strikeouts and two earned runs. CBC entered Right Handed Pitcher, Cody Vega to replace Martinez on the mound. The score after six innings of play, Murray State would lead 6-3. Following the two runs added, Vega and the Cougars would hold the Aggies scoreless for the next three innings.

The Cougars would have runners on base in the bottom of the eighth inning, but were not able to score. As the game entered the bottom of the ninth, Kolb would lead off the inning with a Single up the middle. Kolb would advance to second base following a passed ball. Left Fielder, Kyle McShaffry drew first base off a Walk. Bailey would enter the batter's box with runners on first and second base and one out. Bailey hit a RBI Double, scoring Kolb. The Cougars would enter Jordan Wofford as a pinch runner for Bailey. Runners would be on second and third base for CBC, the score now 6-4. A passed ball would score, McShaffry from third base. Wofford advanced to third base for CBC. Gonzales who was currently at the plate, drew a Walk. Spencer Wallace would come up to the dish as a pinch hitter for Coastal Bend with two outs, runners on the corners. Needing one out, the Aggies got caught in a bit of a pickle when Head Coach, Brian Bauerle called for an early break a double steal. Gonzales, who was on first, caught the pitchers attention off the mound as he was attempting to steal second base. As soon as the Murray State pitcher turned his back, Wofford high tailed it to Home plate. Once the pitcher realized Wofford was stealing Home, it was too late. Wofford would tie up the game, 6-6 and Gonzales would be safe at second base. Coach Bauerle's play would be executed to perfection for CBC. The Cougars would head to extra innings versus the Aggies. Vega would hold Murray State to another scoreless frame in the tenth inning with back to back strikeouts. Unfortunately, CBC was not able to score in the bottom of the tenth inning. The Aggies hit a two run home run in the eleventh inning to take an 8-6 lead. The Cougars fought hard at the plate but were not able to score any runs. Coastal Bend would lose, 8-6. Vega pitched four and two thirds of an inning, only allowing one hit, one walk, two earned runs and seven strikeouts. 


The Cougars would host San Jacinto College for the night game on Saturday, following a Murray State College, San Jacinto ball game. Coastal Bend gave Left Handed Pitcher, Clay Glover the nod to start against San Jac. CBC would hold the Gators scoreless in the first inning, but the Gators would return the favor to end the first inning. In the second inning, the Gators would score two runs before the Cougars could get the final out. The Cougars would be held hitless for the second consecutive inning. In the top of the third, the Gators would tack on another run to lead, 3-0. Second baseman, JB Trees would record the Cougars first hit of the night in the bottom of the third inning.

During the top of the fourth inning, The umpires would postpone the ballgame due to Fog making the game difficult to play in.

The Cougars and Gators will resume play on April, 11th when San Jacinto comes back to Joe Hunter Field.
