Cougars Beat Lions to Advance in District C Tournament

Beeville, Tx- In the second game of the NJCAA Division III District C East Divisional Tournament, Coastal Bend College hosted the Mountain View College Lions at Joe Hunter Field for an afternoon showdown.

The CBC coaching staff decided to go with Left Handed Pitcher, Josh Mendez on the mound.

Mountain View and Coastal Bend would both be held scoreless through the first three innings of the game.

It would not be until the Bottom of the Fourth inning when the Cougars hung up five runs on the scoreboard to break the 0-0 tie. With the bases juiced, Shortstop, JB Trees hit a three RBI Triple scoring. Trees, himself crossed the plate during that sequence to put run up number four on the board. Left Fielder, Jordan Wofford would step into the batter's box next, as he smacked a ball deep into Left Center Fielder while speeding across the bases for a Inside The Park Home Run.

The Lions immediately responded with five runs of their own in the Top of the fifth inning to tie the ball game back up.

Mendez went on to pitch five complete innings, scattering four hits, while allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts for his outing. Cody Vega entered the game to relieve Mendez on the bump.

For his performance, Vega pitched three complete innings giving up two hits, one run while striking out two batters.

With the Lions taking a 6-5 lead into the Bottom of the Seventh inning, the Cougars looked to regain the lead. Coastal Bend did just that, scoring two runs in the inning to go ahead 7-6. After hitting a Double, Kolb was able to score at Home following an RBI Single from Right Fielder, Kyler Bumstead. A few batters later, Designated Hitter, Cooper brought in Bumstead with an RBI Single of his own.

Holding Mount View off the scoreboard in the Eighth inning, CBC eyed some insurance. Center Fielder, Kody Kolb traded places with Wofford as he brought him Home with an RBI Double to lead 8-6 heading into the Ninth inning.

Coastal Bend Closer, Trent Sholders entered the game to close out the ball game for CBC. Sholders allowed one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in his one inning of work to earn his 13th Save of the year.

Vega received the Win for the game, his team leading Seventh victory.

Coastal Bend improves to 26-29 on the year with the win. CBC will face Brookhaven College in the next round of the District C East Divisional Tournament on Friday, May 10th at 4:00 PM.
