Cougar Softball Kicks Off Season with Annual Classic

Beeville, TX-  The Coastal Bend College softball program began the 2023 season by hosting their annual Coastal Bend Softball Classic this past weekend. The Cougars hosted three teams: the Midland College Chaparrals, Cisco College Wranglers, and the Lamar State College – Port Arthur Seahawks in a round robin style tournament. Coastal Bend went on to face the Chaparrals and Wranglers twice, going 1-3 over the course of the weekend event.

In the opening game, Coastal Bend's rally falls short with a 3-2 loss to the Midland College Chaparrals on Friday. After going down 3-0 early the game, the Cougars clawed their way back into the contest.

Freshman Pitcher, Emma Garcia was in the circle for the Cougars. The left-handed hurler only surrendered three runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out five opposing batters. Coastal Bend College didn't commit a single error in the field. 

Coastal Bend's offense was powered by Krystal Perez''s Triple, Kayla Martinez's Double, Molly Olivarez''s Double, and Lesly Gonzalez's Single.


Looking to get in the win column, the Cougars squared off against the Cisco College Wranglers for the final game on Friday night. Both teams were strong in the circle for the game, but Coastal Bend defeated Cisco, 2-1 to earn their first win of the season.

Freshman, Danielle Pompa received the win to get things started for CBC. Pompa allowed just five hits to the Wranglers. She allowed five hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven. On defense, Coastal Bend College didn't commit a single error in the field. 

The Cougars hit one home run on the day. Krystal Perez went for the long ball in the fourth inning to put the Cougars in the lead.

Coastal Bend College tallied seven hits in the game. Pompa went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend College in hits. Pompa, Juliana Dominguez, and Krystal Perez all managed multiple hits for the game. 


Moving onto Saturday's games, the Cougars got things started against the Midland College Chaparrals again. In a slugfest, the cougars managed to score 7 runs in the first two innings of the game. The Chaparrals would not be denied as they cross the play nine times in the top of the fourth inning. Though the Cougars fought hard until the end of the game, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Walks and Errors hindered team in blue. Midland ended up beating Coastal Bend, by a final score of 18-11. 
 
Debra Favors started the game for Coastal Bend College. The Freshman Pitcher allowed ten hits and nine runs over five innings, striking out one. Anamelia Ramirez threw two innings out of the bullpen.

Coastal Bend College launched three home runs on the day. Jaymie Gonzales went deep in the first inning. Coastal Bend College tallied four runs in the second inning. Coastal Bend College's offense in the inning came from a triple by Krystal Perez and a double by Juliana Dominguez.

Krystal Perez put one out in the sixth inning. Kayla Martinez hit a solo homer in the seventh inning. Coastal Bend's Juliana Dominguez and Krystal Perez all managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Dominguez drove in runs on a double in the second and a double in the fourth. Dominguez led Coastal Bend College with three hits in four at bats.  Coastal Bend College collected ten hits while Midland recorded 18 in the high-scoring affair.


Coastal Bend would again jump out to an early lead in the last game of the tournament but their bats would cool off. Cisco would then score six runs in the top of the third to take control of the game.  Coastal Bend College lost the lead late in a 9-7 defeat to Cisco College Wranglers on Saturday. The Cisco College Wranglers scoring one run in the sixth inning to take the lead at 7-6. The Wranglers would score two more runs in the seventh inning but, Coastal Bend's come back fell short as they could only manage one run in the bottom of the final inning. The Wrangler out-hit the Cougars, as they produced 18 hits in the night cap.

Coastal Bend College got things started in the first inning when Juliana Dominguez homered on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs. Coastal Bend College evened things up at six in the bottom of the fourth inning when Krystal Perez Doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring two run.

Coastal Bend College scattered eight hits in the game. Kelsey Perez and Dominguez each racked up multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Perez led Coastal Bend College with three hits in three at bats. Coastal Bend College got things started in the first inning when Juliana Dominguez homered on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs. Coastal Bend College evened things up at six in the bottom of the fourth inning when Krystal Perez doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs. She led Coastal Bend College with three hits in three at bats. Kelsey Perez and Dominguez each racked up multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. 

Emma Garcia toed the rubber for Coastal Bend College. The bulldog surrendered nine runs on 18 hits over seven innings, striking out three and walking zero. Coastal Bend College didn't commit a single error in the field. 

The Cougars currently hold a 1-3 record to begin the season. Their next set of games will be on Saturday, February 4th with road trip to San Antonio, TX as they face Trinity University for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 12:00 PM.
