Cougars Pick Up Two Region Wins with Sweep of Angelina College

Game 1

Coastal Bend College Softball took Saturday's game one in dramatic fashion. Coastal Bend would score six runs in the final inning, for the 11-10 walk-off victory over the Angelina Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners would strike first taking a 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but CBC would come roaring back in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead scoring three runs with a RBI single from Molly Olivarez and then two batters later Kayla Martinez would drive in two more runs with a line drive single of her own to right field.

The Coastal Bend bats would not be denied in the third inning, as Juliana Dominguez would collect another two RBI single to center field to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The Cougars would hold the Roadrunners scoreless until the fifth inning. The fifth inning would be the start of the Angelina rally as the roadrunners would score nine runs over the final three innings to take the lead back at 10-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Cougar bats would come back to life after being held scoreless since the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cougars seventh inning rally would begin with a three-run homer from Olivarez. After drawing 3 consecutive walks and a swinging bunt from Kelsey Perez to move the runners over but Lesly Gonzalez was tag out at home for the first out of the inning. Next batter Janice Corona would drive in the fourth run of the inning with a hard-hit ground ball to third base to drive the ninth run to bring the Cougars to within one at 10-9.

Krystal Perez would ground into the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice as the Roadrunner third base threw out the Cougars Anamelia Ramirez at home plate. With the bases still loaded the Cougars Jaymie Gonzalez would drive in the winning runs with a two RBI single to right center field to complete the 11-10 come from behind victory. 

The Coastal Bend bats were on fire all day CBC would record 12 hits and 10 RBIs that accounted for the 11 Cougar runs. The Cougars were led at the plate by trio of Cougars with two hits each in the game, Molly Olivarez, Krystal Perez and Jaymie Gonzales.  Olivarez also hit a home run and led the Cougars in RBIs with four, Gonzales was not far behind with three runs batted in as well.

Danielle Pompa started in the circle for the Cougars, surrendering five runs on seven hits over five innings, while striking out an opposing batter. However, recorded a no decision in the game.  Emma Garcia came in relief to secure the win for the cougars pitching two innings giving up five runs on five hits and one walk.

 

Game 2

The Coastal Bend College Softball team swept the Saturday doubleheader with the Angelina College Roadrunners in another high scoring come from behind victory 11-10 in the last inning.

In Game two it would be the Cougars who would strike first and often. Scoring two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning. Angelina would finally get into the scoring column in the fifth inning to cut the Coastal Bend lead four at 5-1 and from that point the game would become more intense as both teams would combine to score 16 runs over the final three innings. Molly Olivarez lead off the bottom of the fifth inning with a towering double off the left center field fence. Lesly Gonzales would advance Olivarez to third a sacrifice grounder to first base.

Next batter Kayla Martinez would bloop a single in-between first and second base. Angelina would get three runs in the sixth inning to pull within two runs at 6-4. But CBC would continue to be aggressive at the plate. Janice Corona led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center field and advanced to second base on a past ball. Krystal Perez would then drive in Corona with a double that hit off the center field fence. Jaymie Gonzalez would drive in Perez with a hard-hit single of her own to increase the Cougar lead to 8-4.

The Roadrunners would make things interesting in the top of the seventh inning with six runs of their own to pull in front 10-8. So once again the Cougars would find themselves down going into the bottom of the last inning. Martinez drew a walk to start of the inning. Leilani Cruz entered the game to run for Martinez.

The next CBC batter, Danielle Pompa would ground out to second base, but Cruz would advance to second base on the throw to first. Next it would be Kelsey Perez turn to double out to the right field fence and bring in Cruz to cut the Angelina College lead to one at 10-9. The Cougars would be down to their last out after Corona flew out to center field. Krystal Perez stepped into the box and sent the first pitch to center field for an RBI triple to tie the score up at ten all.

 The Cougars Jaymie Gonzalez sent the next pitch past the Roadrunner's second baseman into right field to score Perez from third base on the walk off single to win the game 11-10 to complete the sweep of the Angelina College Roadrunners.

Elia Palomo got the start Coastal Bend College. The righty allowed 12 hits and seven runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out two. Debra Favors came in to get the final two outs and the win for the Cougars.

Coastal Bend College is back on the diamond on Saturday, April 1 for a conference doubleheader with Lamar State-Port Arthur in Port Arthur, TX.
