Cougars Beat Clarendon College; Lose to 2 More at Coastal Bend Classic

Beeville, Tx-  Coastal Bend College womens's basketball played #15 Nationally Ranked, South Plains College for the first day of the Coastal Bend Classic.

The Cougars started out the contest with a slow start, trailing the Lady Texans 24-9 after the first period. South Plains flexed their muscles for the remainder of the first half, leading 50-21 at the break. 

Coastal Bend saw their scoring improve from the first half, only to be outscored in the second half by five points but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Texans. The Cougars lost by a final score of 96-62. 

CBC Forward, Aubrey Guerra lead the Cougars in scoring with 21 points and recording four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Guard, Angelina Barela netted 15 points and collect three rebounds for the contest. Marley Martinez dropped nine points off the bench while recording two assists and two steals on the night. 

 


 

On Friday, November 17th for the second game of the classic, Coastal Bend faced against Clarendon College.

Needing a victory, the Cougars came out playing tough nosed, scrappy defense lead by Deysta Wilber-Bradsher. Marley Martinez hit a three pointer to beat the buzzer to put CBC up 39-28 at halftime over the Bulldogs. 

In the second half of the ball game, CBC controlled the momentum and lead the Bulldogs as much as ..  The Cougars slowly put the game out of reach to earn their first victory of the season. The Final score of the contest was 75-68. 

CBC Guard, Jada Mitchell lead the Cougars with 17 points and coralled six rebounds. Wilbert-Bradsher had a monster game in the paint, making her presence felt with 16 points, eight rebounds, seven blocks and 2 steals. Guard, Angelina Barela knocked down 16 points to with her four assists, two rebounds and two steals. Martinez finished the game with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the contest. 

 


 

 

For the final game of the classic, the Cougars played against Ranger College on Saturday, November 17th. 

To begin the game, both the Rangers and Cougars battled hard for the first quarter of play. During the second quarter, the Rangers built a lead off of turnovers and missed free throws from Coastal Bend. The Cougars trailed at halftime, 34-20. 

Coastal Bend kept pace with Ranger, scoring wise in the second half of the contest, but the lead from the first half of play was insurmountable for CBC. The Cougars ultimatley fell to the Rangers by a final score of 60-46. 

CBC Guard, Jada Mitchell lead the Cougars in points scored with 12 and recorded three rebounds. Forward, Emiko Hemphill netted 11 points while snagging down six rebounds and two assists. Marley Martinez was the next leading scorer for the game, adding seven points, two assists, two rebounds and one steal to her stat line. 

 

Next up, the Cougars will be traveling to Big Spring, Tx for the Howard Classic on November 23rd and 24th as they play Howard College and Frank Philips College respectively.
