Cougars Split at Howard Classic
Big Spring, Tx- The Coastal Bend College Women's Basketball program made their way to Big Spring, Tx this Thanksgiving break to compete in the Howard Classic. For the first game, the Cougars would go up against the Plainsmen of Frank Philips College on Friday, November 23rd. 
 
CBC would jump out to an early 11-3 lead on FPC within the first minutes of play in the first quarter. While defense and full court press lead the charge, the Cougars ended up leading 25-14 after the first period. The momentum shifted towards the Plainsmen in the second period with turnovers from the Cougars. All was not lost as CBC remained leading the contest, 39-34 at halftime.
 
The third quarter of play went back and forth between both ball clubs, but an injury to CBC Center,  Deyesta Wilbert-Bradsher, had to exit the game with three minutes left in the third quarter, had  15 points and nine rebounds. The Cougars would still hang tough & lead the Plainsmen, 58-50 after the third quarter of the ball game. Frank Philips would not fold, and made the game even more interesting while cutting the eight point Cougar lead to three points. Coastal Bend made a great effort  weathering  the storm by hitting clutch free throws to put the game out of reach, winning by a final score of 78-75. 
 
CBC Guard, Jada Mitchell lead the Cougars in scoring with 16 and also added four assists and three steals to her name. Wilbert-Bradsher exited the contest in the third quarter but not before dropping in 15 points, nine rebounds and nabbing two steals along with a block. Guard, Marley Martinez netted 13 points, shooting 2-4 from beyond the arc. Forward, Emiko Hemphill scored eight points and snagged down 12 rebounds with three steals for the game. Francheska Aguino scored nine points with four assists and two rebounds. Aubrey Guerra chipped in eight points to help CBC, while alo dishing out eight assists. 
 
 

 

Saturday, November 24th Coastal Bend would face Howard College for the finale of the classic. The Cougars started the game slowly and dug themselves a huge hole early by turning the ball over and poor shooting. The Hawks led at the break, 47-13. The second half, the Cougars played  better but the deficit they faced was too much to overcome. The Cougars scored a total of 23 points in the second half, while the Hawks scored 30. Howard ultimatley beat Coastal Bend by a final of 77-36. 

Coastal Bend Guard, Angelina Barela lead the Cougars in scoring wtih eight points, five rebounds and two assists. Forward, Emiko Hemphill scored six points and corralled a game high, 14 rebounds. Jada Mitchell netted six points and grabbed six boards to assist the Cougars. 

 

The Cougars will be in back in action at the Peter S. Marecek Fitness Center this Saturday, December 1st as they host Bossier Parish Community College at 1:00 PM.
