Cougars Route Rangers, Set School Record in Victory

Beeville, Tx- Coastal Bend Women's Basketball earned a much needed victory on Thursday, January 31st. In doing so, they set a Coastal Bend Women's Basketball record for Most Points scored in a game. A slow start "terrified" Coach Purswell as the San Antonio College Lady Rangers responded to everything in the first quarter.  San Antonio College missed only three trey balls in the first quarter to stay within striking distance with the score 25-17 at the end of one.  "Very disappointed in how we came out and did not play any defense, I had to call two timeouts and there was no response out of either timeout on next few possessions", Coach Purswell said.  The first was filled with the lady cougars missing layups and getting outplayed for ten minutes.

The second quarter Coastal Bend woke up scoring in all facets and distributing the ball well on offense.  They also played solid defense to outscore the Lady Rangers 44 to 12.  The Cougars got out in transition and knocked down four three's in the second quarter.  "Amazing what ball pressure does", Coach Purswell said.  Aubrey Guerra struck with two three pointers and two layups for ten points.  Emiko Hemphill was all over the boards getting three offensive rebounds and put backs.  Marley Martinez knocked down a three and a floater in the lane.

The third quarter was a lot the same but still missed layups and turnovers hindered lady cougars.  Jada Mitchell gave a spurt off the bench in the third to get a couple of steals and layups to start the attack.  Angelina Barela followed with a drive layup and Emiko Hemphill a steal and a layup.  Tianie Johnson worked the block and paint to score two tough left handed hook shots.  The Cougars were able to put the game out of reach but Coach Purswell wanted to see if the team was going to keep the swith on as CBC was well on their way to a Win, leading 98-44 after three quarters of play.

The team responded well and finished out the fourth quarter 26-10 to win the ball game and also recording a school record for most points scored, eclipsing the 2014-2015 Cougars 119 mark with 124.  The final score was 124-54 making margin of victory tied for third all time on CBC Women's Basketball history.  Jada Mitchell finished with a career high 28 points, followed by Aubrey Guerra and Emiko Hemphill with 20 a piece, marking three lady cougars scoring twenty points.  The rest of the scoring came from Tianie Johnson with 14, Marley Martinez with 11 points, Angelina Barela with 10 points, Cassie Hogan with nine points.  Emiko Hemphill also pencilled in her tenth double-double of the season with 13 rebound to go with her 20 points.  Frannie Aguino also had 8 assists and four steals on the game

Coach Purswell said after the game, "This was a much needed win, we have been in a lull since we returned from break playing two OT games and losing by five or less four times.  Very disappointed in the first quarter our team, our players cannot turn on and off the switch it has to stay on the entire time."

The Cougars next game will be on the road as they travel to Bossier City, LA for a Region XIV Conference matchup with Bossier City Parish Community College on Saturday, February 2nd. Tip-Off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
