Cougars Tie Conference Wins Record with Overtime Victory vs Blinn

Beeville, Tx- Coastal Bend Women's Basketball hosted Blinn College on Wednesday evening, February 13th for the second and final meeting of Region XIV Conference play. Both clubs each had three conference wins, so an advancement in the standings was on the line. 

Coastal Bend came out flat in the opening quarter as Blinn took a 19-9 lead after the first period. The second quarter went better for CBC, except the Buccaneers traded baskets as they lead by 12 points at intermission, 40-28. 

Coach Purswell said at halftime, "We need to have confidence in our shots and keep letting it fly.", and thats just what the Cougars did. During the third quarter, Aubrey Guerra, Jada Mitchell each made a three point basket and Marley Martinez hit two triples which help the Cougars close the gap. Coastal Bend outscored Blinn 26-16 in the third quarter, to shorten the margain at 56-54. 

In the fourth quarter, Sophomore Captains, Angelina Barela and Emiko Hemphill combined for 13 points. Guerra chipped in an additional five points to tie the contest at the end of regulation. Coach Purswell was disappointed in the exectution of the last offensive play, turning the ball over back to Blinn with 23 seconds left on the clock. The Cougars made a crucial defensive stop when Hemphill jumped a pass to steal the ball with three seconds left. 

The Cougars quickly jumped out to an eight point lead over the Bucs with assists from Francheska Aguino to Hemphill for a lay in and Guerra for two deep triples. CBC went on to outscore Blinn, 13-5 in overtime to win, 86-78 for their fourth conference win of the season. The win has now tied the Coastal Bend Women's Basketball Program season record for most conferences wins in a season.

Guerra lead the team with 20 points on 6-17 shooting and 10 rebounds. Forward, Hemphill contributed nine points while snagging down 15 rebounds and four steals. Guard, Barela, scored 17 points on 7-13 shooting and going 3-3 at the charity strike with three steals. Martinez added 13 points for the contest. Guard, Cassie Hogan chipped in 10 points for the Cougars. Mitchell poured in 9 points for CBC. Point Guard, Aguino lead the team in assists with five and added six points to her stat line.
 
The Cougars will be back in action as they travel to Carthage, Tx for a Region XIV Conference matchup against Panola. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Saturday, February, 16th.
