Cougars Slay Dragons in Paris

Paris, Tx- As the Coastal Bend Women's Basketball played their final Region XIV Conference road game  of the season on Wednesday, February 27th, they would attempt to make program history. With a Win against Paris Junior College, it would mark the first time that CBC has ever beaten PJC. A victory would also set a new record for confernce wins in a seaon, with five. Not to mention, a Region XIV Tournament battle for the final spot would be on the line.

In the first half, Coastal Bend started the game off slow, missing 5 or 6 layups in the first quarter but hit just enough shots to keep the quarter close at 11-12, in favor of Paris. The second quarter, CBC held the Dragons to just six points and very few second shot opportunities to go into halftime with a 25-18 lead.
 
The third quarter brought lots of missed shots and lacksidasical plays from Coastal Bend and Paris, but a few late buckets helped CBC keep the adavantage at 38-34. Heading into the fourth, the Cougars would catch fire to put the game out of reach for the Dragons, scoring 23 points and finishing with a 61-47 victory in a must win to keep them in the hunt for the conference tournament.  
 
The contest was a complete team effort having three Cougars in double figures.  Two players also posted Double-Doubles on the night. 
 
CBC Post, Tianie Johnson notched her first double double of the season with 12 points and a game high 17 rebounds. Forward, Emiko Hemphill recorded her 13th double double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Guard, Jada Mitchell netted 13 points on 9-10 FT's and 2 FG's. Guard, Marley Martinez scored eight points, going 4-4 from the field. Point Guard, Francheska Aguino had a season high 10 assists to with her five points on the night.
 
Coastal Bend Coach Purswell said, "A total team effort and we finally got stops we needed.  To go to Paris and hold them to 47 points a team that scores like that is a good defensive effort in my books.  Also we have been making 7-10 3's a game lately and we did not hit one last night.  Find a way to win and this team steps up and fights every time.  So proud of this group and every one of these young women individually and collectively!"
 
Saturday is last home regular season game and we will honor the sophomores before the game.
This win breaks all-time conference win record with five and puts CBC on the cusp of the regional conference tournament for first time in program history. 
 
This season, Coastal Bend has beaten Bossier Parish Community College, Blinn College and Paris Junior Collegefor the first time in school history.  Five conference wins in a season sets a new school record.  Please come out and support the Cougars on Saturday, March 2nd vs #8 Tyler Junior College at Peter S.
