Women's Hoops Falls Short in Region XIV Play In Game

Bossier City, LA- As the month of March has begun, the Coastal Bend Women's Basketball program has found themselves in unfamilar territory. On Monday, March, 4th the Cougars would be playing Paris Junior College in a Region XIV Play-In Game for the last spot in the Conference Tournament.

The Cougars and PJC ended the season tied for the remaining sport in the tournament with matching 3-15 records.  The two teams split their regular season contests with the Cougars losing an over-time thriller at home back on January 23rd, 99-94; only to turn the tables on the Dragons by winning in Paris less than a week ago 61-47. A Cougar win would send them to the Region XIV Championship Tournament for the first time in school history.

Paris Junior College controlled Tip-Off and most of the quarter, until CBC made a run to trail, 18-15 after the first period of play. In the second quarter, the Cougars would flip the script to tie up the contest at haltime, 31-31.

During the third quarter, both ball clubs would continue to battle back and forth. The game would be tied at 47, heading into the final quarter. The fourth quarter would end up being the down fall for CBC. The Cougars would fight hard for the majority of the period but as the game entered the final minutes, Coastal Bend dug themselves a hole they could not get out of with defensive lapses while shots did not go in. Paris would end up beating CBC, 70-63.

Coastal Bend Guard, Cassie Hogan lead the team in scoring with 16 points while grabbing six rebounds. Guard, Marley Martinez netted 12 points for CBC, going four of nine from three point range. Post player, Tianie Johnson fell one point short of a Double-Double, scoring nine points and snagging down 11 rebounds. Point Guard, Francheska Aguino scored seven points and three rebounds while dishing out six assists. Jada Mitchell tallied seven points to go along with her four rebounds, two assists and two steals on the game. Sophomore, Angelina Barela scored four points while corraling eight rebounds. Forward, Emiko Hemphill also scored four points but posted a monster game on the glass, snatching up 19 rebounds and three steals.

Coastal Bend wraps the season up with 8 wins falling one victory short of tying a program record. The Cougars went 8-23 during the 2018-2019 season

Francheska Aguino set a school record for assists in a season with 148, breaking the record of 144.

Emiko Hemphill also set a school record for offensive rebounds in a season with 151. Hemphill finishes second in program history for total rebounds with 346.

Coastal Bend will be returning a lot of talent next year, 11 Freshmen as they look to regroup & reload for the 2019-2020 season.
