Tough Outing for Cougars at Coastal Bend Classic

Beeville, Tx-  For the second year in a row, the Coastal Bend College Women's Basketball program held the Coastal Bend Classic. This year, Blinn College, McLennan Community College, Temple College, Ranger College, Palo Alto College, San Antonio College and Northeast Lakeview College participated in the classic.

On Thursday, November 14th Coastal Bend hosted McLennan CC. The Cougars got off to a slow start in the first quarter, trailing Highlassies 23-10. In the second quarter, Coastal Bend picked up the pace a bit, but McLennan still outscored CBC, 23-13 in the second frame.

Entering the third quarter of the game, CBC trailed MCC, 46-23. Coastal Bend came out strong during the third frame, outscoring McLennan, 17-14. During the fourth quarter, the Cougars traded points with the Highlassies for most of the period. The Cougars performed much better in the second half, but ultimatley lost, 80-54. Coastal Bend fell behind early and could not recover as the game progressed.

Guard, Jada Mitchell and Center, Essence Richards both led the team in scoring with 11 points each. Mitchell recorded four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the game. Richards grabbed a team high, five rebounds and three assists during her time on the court. Point Guard, Olivia Chisolm dropped in nine points to go with her three rebounds and two assists. Cassie Hogan poured in nine points while snagging two boards, one steal and one assist. 


Next up for the Cougars they faced Ranger College for the second game of the classic on Friday, November 15th. To open up the game, both clubs fought hard for points, but battled harder on the defensive end of the court. 

Ranger edged out Coastal Bend in the first two quarters to take a 34-28 lead at the break. In the second half of the game, scoring was difficult for CBC as they scored 10 points in the third and 11 points in the fourth quarter. 

After keeping the game close in the first half, a lapse in scoring hindered the Cougars from winning the game. The Rangers beat Coastal Bend by a final score of 68-49.

Guard, Marley Martinez led the team in scoring with 16 points. Jada Mitchell scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds for CBC. Jada Sheridan poured in eight points off the bench and had four rebounds, two assists for her stat line. 


In the final game of the Coastal Bend Classic, CBC faced Temple College. The Leopards and Cougars started out the game with a very competitive quarter. 

Temple took a slim lead after the first period, 16-14. As play began in the second quarter, the Leopards created some space from the Cougars. At halftime, CBC trailed TC, 41-26.

During the third quarter, Temple continued to outscore Coastal Bend, despite a better effort from CBC. The Leopards took a 64-44 lead heading into the final quarter. 

Coastal Bend fought until the last buzzer, but the lead Temple had built was too much for the Cougars. CBC lost by a final score of 88-58 to the Leopards.

Martinez again lead the team in scoring for the second game in a row, with 16. Cassie Hogan swished in 14 points and corralled eight rebounds for the Cougars. Sheridan provided a good boost from the bench with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
