Cougars Blanked During Thanksgiving Holiday Break

Big Spring, Tx- During the Thanksgiving holiday, the CBC Women's Basketball team traveled to Big Spring, Tx to compete in the Howard College Classic. Coastal Bend faced Frank Phillips College for the first game of the classic on Friday, November 29th.

The Cougars kept within striking distance after the first quarter versus the Lady Plainsmen, but trailed 15-22. In the second quarter of the game, CBC went cold on the offensive end, only scoring nine points, digging themselves into a hole. Coastal Bend trailed Frank Phillips, 24-44 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cougars played better but continued to trail the Lady Plainsmen, 40-61. Heading into the fourth quarter, Frank Phillips opened up the flood gates and ran away with the game, beating CBC by a final score of 51-82.

Coastal Bend had three players help lead the team in scoring; Marley Martinez, Essence Richards and Aneth Jimenez each scored eight points. Martinez added five rebounds, three assists and six steals to her stat line. Richards grabbed eight boards while recording two steals and three blocks for the game. Jimenez corralled five rebounds and had four steals for the Cougars. Cassie Hogan swished in seven points and snagged four rebounds for the contest. Point Guard, Olivia Chisolm tallied in six points while grabbing eight rebounds, four assists for Coastal Bend.

The next game in the Classic entailed facing the host team, Howard College. Coastal Bend faced the Hawks three weeks earlier, beating them at Home, 67-71.

Howard College took a five point lead, after the first quarter to lead CBC, 16-21. In the second quarter, Coastal Bend had trouble scoring, but tough play on the defensive end of the floor kept them in the ball game. At halftime, the Cougars trailed the Hawks, 26-37.

The scoring woes overlapped into the third quarter for Coastal Bend, unfortunately. CBC managed to score four points in the third frame, trailing HC 30-47. The Cougars would need a strong fourth quarter to give themselves an opportunity to win the game. As the game would have it, CBC did have a good output on the offense, but not so much on the defensive side of the court. Howard essentially matched the 18 points Coastal Bend provided by scoring 17 of their own. The Cougars ended up falling to the Hawks, 48-64.

For the second straight game the Cougars would have a tie amongst the game high scorers; Marley Martinez and Rosalie Hansen helped provide 10 points each. Martinez grabbed two rebounds while dishing out three assists and three steals for the game. Hansen added two assists and one steal for her stat line. Center, Essence Richards scored seven points and cleaned the glass with a game high, 11 rebounds. Point Guard, Olivia Chisolm netted in six points while corralling three rebounds, five assists and four steals for CBC.

Coastal Bend will begin Region XIV Conference play against Jacksonville College on Saturday, December 7th at 2:00 PM in Jacksonville, Tx.
