Cougars Off to Hot Start; Set Program Record

Beeville, TX-  For the first CBC Women's Basketball Classic of the season, the Cougars went 3-0 defeating Howard 68-59, LSU-Eunice 72-69, and beating Southwestern Christian College 80-59. This also marks a program record to begin a season, with three straight victories.

In the first matchup Thursday night the Cougars met up with the Hawks from Howard College. Coastal Bend started the first quarter hot and ended the first quarter hotter with a 20-10 lead. Then pushed an extra point lead to end the second going into halftime up 35-24. The third quarter saw turnovers and lack of transition defense and Howard College cutting the lead by seven to leave Coastal Bend up by four 50-46. The final quarter Coastal Bend got stops they needed and beat Howard by a final of 68-59 for their first win. Coastal Bend was led by JayDee Zamora with 19 points, 6 of 12 from the field and 4 of 9 from 3-point land. Jordan Shephard followed with 18 points and a near perfect mark from 3-point line at 4 of 5. Alexes Rocha stepped up off the bench with 11 points and 50% mark from downtown. Also Eliza Rodriguez ended the game with only 6 points but had 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

In the second game Friday evening the Coastal Bend Cougars took on LSU-Eunice Bengals. After the first quarter the lady Cougars saw their first deficit of the year trailing 20-21 and could not close out halftime any closer going into locker rooms down by four 34-38. In a defensive battle in the third the Cougars outscored the Bengals by four to go into the fourth at 51 all. The final quarter saw back and forth action changing leads. Down by 1 JayDee Zamora made a huge and one play at the rim to take lead 70-69 and knocked down one free throw to go up 71-69. A huge defensive play on a layup by #14 Sydney DeDe and a defensive rebound by #20 LaLa Kennedy gave #5 JayDee Zamora one more shot at Free Throws where she went one for two again and sealed a 72-69 victory over LSU-Eunice. Stats for Coastal Bend were LaLa Kennedy with 19 points and 15 rebounds. JayDee Zamora with 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Eliza Rodriguez with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists.

The final action saw Coastal Bend College play Southwestern Christian College Rams. A lot of offense in the first quarter had the lady Cougars take a 25-20 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter Coastal Bend added to their five-point lead by winning the quarter by five points and going into halftime up 41-31. The third quarter the Cougars held Southwestern Christian College to eight points to increase their lead 57-39. The final quarter saw scoring both ways but the lady Cougars outscored the lady Rams 23-20 for a final of 80-59. Leading the stat line was Eliza Rodriguez with 24 points, 10 boards, and 2 assists. JayDee Zamora was second in line with 18 points, 9 rebounds, five assists, and three steals. LaLa Kennedy finish with 16 points. Also Cieara Dinwiddie and Diane Lara finished with six rebounds apiece.
