Volleyball Struggles in Laredo

Fresh off a win at Houston Community College, the CBC Volleyball team traveled to Laredo to participate in the Palomino Challenge with high hopes of earning their first Region XIV Conference win.

LCC had their way the Cougars in the first two sets, winning in relatively easy fashion 25-17 and 25-18.  CBC started the third set down 7-2 and it looked as though it would be an easy victory for the Palominos, but the Cougars clawed back with inspired defense to take the third set 26-24.

The fourth set was a back and forth battle with CBC taking a lead late and holding set point 24-21, but were unable to finish off the home team, falling 29-27, to end the match 3-1.

For the Cougars it was a strong performance by the sophomore outside hitting tandem of Christina Montez and Pam Ellis who recorded 14 and 13 kills respectively.

Victoria College

Maybe it was the match the day before, maybe it was just bad luck, but the Cougars came out flat and lifeless versus the Pirates of Victoria College on Day Two of the Palomino Challenge losing 25-12, 25-10 and 25-13.  Sophomore Pam Ellis was again the team leader recording nine kills and nine digs.

Universidad de Regiomontana

Playing their last match of tournament versus a team from Mexico was not the confidence builder the Cougars needed.  Fatigued and battered, CBC mounted a challenge dropping the first set 25-21, before losing the sets two and three 25-15 and 25-17.  Ellis again was the leader for the Cougars offensively collecting five kills, along with Freshman Lindsay Garibay who also put five balls away.  The star of the day for the Cougars was Sophomore Libero Ashylnn Goff, who gobbled up 16 digs in the losing effort.

The Cougars will be back on the road for the third of four straight road weeks when they travel to Midland College for one of the biggest two-year school tournaments of the year.  CBC kicks off play at 2:00 pm on Friday the 29th versus Odessa College before playing Trinidad Sate Junior College at 5:00 pm.  Saturday's match-ups include host Midland at 2:00 pm and Ranger College at 4:00 pm.
