Cougar Volleyball Fall in Season Finale

Cougar Volleyball Fall in Season Finale

The Coastal Bend College volleyball team saved some of its best play for last, when they hosted Victoria Community College on Halloween evening.  Inspired by a highly energetic, well costumed crowd, the Cougars battled as hard or harder than they had all season long in an attempt to close the 2017 season on a winning note.

The Cougars jumped out early with 5-0 lead in the first set, before the Pirates of VCC battled their way back to win a nip and tuck game 25-23.  The second set was again a back and forth affair before VCC pulled away late.  CBC Head Coach, Paul Cantrell, made some personel changes going into the third set and the result was inspired defensive push that gave CBC an quick 25-13 win.  The fourth set saw Victoria jump out early, only to CBC climb back into the set pulling even at 18 points a piece.  The two teams traded kill after kill, block and bloack and dig after dig, until VCC made the most of a bad blocking match-up and squeezed out the 25-20 victory to win the match three sets to one.

The stat sheet showed exactly how well CBC played defensively as they dug a season high 89 balls, paced by Meaghan Gonzales' 28, and Lindsay Garibay's 21.  Gladis Guerrero, Ashlynn Goff and Christina Montez all corralled double digit digs with 14, 11 and 11 respectively.  That floor defensive effort came in part to the night the Cougar blockers had as the CBC front row swatted down a season high nine total blocks.  Precious Lopez was the leader of the block party stopping the Pirates seven total times (three block solos and four block assists), with Garibay stopping four balls on her own.

From the offensive side of the coin, once again Montez paced the Cougars putting down 11 kills including the 400th of her CBC career early in the first set.  Halle Martin contributed eight kills, while Robyn Young added five.
