Volleyball Splits On Opening Day of Lee College Invitational

CBC Volleyball's best-ever start of seven consecutive wins came to an end on Friday morning at the Lee College Invitational in their first match of four on the weekend.

Barton County Community College

If your streak is going to end, doing so to one of the nation's most highly regarded programs isn't a bad place to do that.  Barton County Community College, out of Kansas has multiple national championship banners in its rafters, and now a win over Coastal Bend College to its accolades.  It was back and forth match with CBC jumping out to a 10-2 lead early, before BCCC came roaring back to take a large late lead.  CBC still had more in the tank and fought to even the score late in the set where the two teams set into trench warfare with BCCC pulling out a hard fought 31-29 victory.

Sets two and three were just as physical but not as close on the scoreboard as the size of the Barton County block took its toll on the Cougars as they lost 25-20 and 25-14.  Offensively CBC was led by Freshman Emma Batte who played to her hometown crowd with eight kills and one block.  Alyssa Hutcherson dug up 21 balls, while sophomore Meaghan Gonzalez picked up 12.

Cisco College

As spirited and physical as the first match of the day was, the second match was just as much a back and forth contest between two even teams.  The Cougars did enough to take set one by the narrowest of margins 25-23. Cisco would come charging back to a convincing 25-18 victory.  CBC would turn that momentum back around and take set three convincingly 25-16, only to see Cisco reverse fortunes again in the fourth stanza 25-20; to set up the grand finale.

Cisco would jump out to 2-0 lead and hold a 6-3 lead before a CBC timeout calmed and spurred a rally.  The Cougars took the side change at 8-7, only to keep that pressure on - giving up only two more points on their way to their eighth win of the season.

The outside hitting combo of sophomore Lindsay Garibay and freshman Karizma Matelski each put away nine kills while middles Batte and Precious Lopez patrolled the net leading to three blocks apiece.  Samantha Santos came up big, scoring three aces from service line, picking up four kills to go along with 28 assists.  Defensively, Hutcherson - who is second in the NJCAA in digs/set picked up another 20, while Cierra Hernandez and Garibay scooped 16 and 13 respectively.  Gonzalez added 12 digs include two rally stopping digs in the fifth set, to seal the CBC victory.
