Volleyball Drops Home Opener 3-1 to Lee College

"We gave ourselves a chance; and we couldn't convert it."  was the statement from Head Coach Paul Cantrell after Thursday's four-set loss to Lee College (4-6, 1-0).  The match was the Cougars (9-2, 0-1) home and Region XIV opener and included a large and raucous crowd.  The Rebels jumped out early versus the Cougars and made their lead hold that lead all the way through the first set winning 25-15.

Cantrell made a couple of line-up changes in the second set and the Cougars came roaring out of the gate, using timely serving and tough defense to pull out the second set 25-21.  The third set looked to be going the way of the Columbia and Navy as the Cougars held a 22-19 late lead, but they couldn't convert the last few points and the Rebels took the set and all of the matches momentum, cruising past the Cougars in the fourth set 25-11.

The Cougars had a balanced offensive attack, with freshman Karizma Matelski, Emma Batte and Cameron Del Angel all registering six kills, while Samantha Santos and Lindsay Garibay collected five each.  Alyssa Hutcherson picked up 24 Rebel shots to lead the team in digs, while Alyssa Estrada and Garibay grabbed 10 each.  Estrada picked up three key service aces for CBC, while fellow freshman Amber Willis collected two.

The Cougars were to be back in action on Friday vs. Blinn College, but weather related travel concerns has postponed that game to a later date.  The Cougars will travel to Victoria College on Wednesday for 6:00 pm match-up.
