Volleyball Out Duels Victoria College for 10th Win of Season

The NJCAA's top team defensive and individual defender used that strength to lead the way to a four set victory on the road at Victoria College last night 25-13, 25-19, 25-27, 25-23.  Freshman libero Alyssa Hutcherson, who leads NJCAA Division with 6.66 digs per game racked up 37 Pirate kill attempts to pace the Cougar floor defense efforts.  The Cougars, who average a nation leading 21.94, scooped up 91 Pirate shots on the night.

The Cougars came out roaring leading by as many as 14 points as their serving, blocking and defense left the Pirates with no answers.  The second set was more of the same as the Cougars kept the barrage on using their middle attack of sophomore Precious Lopez and Emma Batte to move out to the two set to none lead.  Set three saw the Cougars go behind early, before making a comeback late.  VC would win the close third set, and nearly steal the fourth; until one final CBC block landed on the court to end the match.

The Cougars racked up seven service aces, with setter Samantha Santos ripping five of those to lead the team.  Lopez and Batte each had four block solos, while gathering two and three block assists respectively.  When the Pirate attack got around the Cougars' front line, it rarely found the floor as in addition to Hutcherson's 37 digs, Lindsay Garibay gobbled up 14; while Santos and Cierra Hernandez each dug 13.

Offensively, the Cougar attack was shared by Gariby and Sydney Whitaker with eight kills each; while Santos and Batte each registered seven kills.

The Cougars will be back in Beeville on Saturday for a Tri-Match with Cedar Valley College, who CBC defeated in five sets to start the season and Region XIV foe Laredo College.  The Cedar Valley match is set for 10:00 am, with the Laredo contest starting one hour after the conclusion of the first match.  Cedar Valley will then play Laredo in the final match of the day.
