The Coastal Bend College Women's Volleyball team joined the "first-ever/best-ever" parade started by their brother and sister sports to open the 2018 season.  Hitting the road for the first of four matches in the Dallas area, CBC faced Cedar Valley College and Vernon College at Cedar Valley winning both on Wednesday to start the season 2-0 and secure the best start in program history.

Cedar Valley College

With 11 freshman on their 16 player roster, Cougar Head Coach Paul Cantrell, wasn't certain what kind of team he would see take the floor on Wednesday.  He had a hunch they would be good defensively and have ball control; but after taking a hard fought five-set thriller, the Cougars have a lot more than just defense and ball control.  Freshman libero Alyssa Hutcherson dug a draw dropping 44 balls to lead the Cougars who dug 110 as a team.  Fellow freshmen backcourt players Alyssa Estrada and Cierra Hernandez gobbled up another 22 and 19 digs respectively, while sophomore team-captain Lindsay Garibay corralled 13 Sun shots.

Precious Lopez knocked down seven balls at the net to lead the team in blocking.  Freshmen Cameron Del Angel and Emma Batte paced the Cougar offense.  With Del Angel knocking down 13 kills, while Batte put seven balls away while leading the team with a .286 hitting percentage.  Freshman setter Samantha Santos spread the ball to all of the Cougar hitters and finished with 39 assists.

Vernon College

The youth movement continued in the Cougars second match of the day as they battled a big, athletic opponent in Chapparals of Vernon College.  Freshman Karizma Matelski led the team in kills with 10 while hitting .269.  Defensively, Hutcherson again led the team with 21 digs while Estrada picked up 12.  Freshman Amber Willis racked up four service-aces to pace the seven service winners the Cougars had on the day.  In the end, CBC took advantage of numerous Vernon errors to pull out the four-set win.
