Coastal Bend College head men’s soccer coach announced Joseph Roberts as assistant coach in August 2025.

Roberts brings over 45 years of global soccer experience as both a player and coach, along with 27 years of distinguished military service as an Honorably Retired Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. He joins the Roadrunners from UTSA, where he served as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer program from 2022–2025. During that time, he contributed to the program’s Conference USA Championship in 2022 and helped develop advanced video, data, and performance analysis systems that tracked over 100,000 player data points.

In his coaching career, Roberts has worked across every level of the game, from youth and academy to collegiate and semi-professional. He spent six years with UPSL sides Alamo City and Inter San Antonio/210 FC, contributing to five division championships and multiple playoff appearances. Internationally, Roberts has coached in Japan, Germany, and the United States, holding leadership roles that included Director of Coaching positions and extensive academy development.

Roberts’ playing career began in Japan in 1978 and extended across Europe and the U.S., where he represented numerous clubs and All-Navy regional teams. He continued competing into adulthood, including appearances with the Screaming Eagles FC, a D.C. United–sponsored side.

A decorated veteran, Roberts served in multiple high-level operational and leadership roles during his Navy career, including Mission Commander, Tactical Action Officer, and Aide to the Secretary of the Navy. His service earned him the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and multiple commendations.

He holds a Master of Science in Sports Science with an emphasis in Soccer Education from Ohio University, a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of San Diego, and advanced certifications including the United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma, Director of Coaching Diploma, and ISPAS Level 3 Accreditation in Performance Analysis.

Roberts’ coaching philosophy is rooted in discipline, adaptability, and teamwork—principles refined through both his military and coaching careers. At Coastal Bend, he will focus on player development, performance analysis, and fostering the leadership qualities of student-athletes on and off the pitch.
