Coastal Bend edges Seahawks 10-9 in conference showdown

A big fourth inning got Coastal Bend College back in its game against Lamar State College Port Arthur, but it was a lone run in the fifth that made the difference in a 10-9 decision by the Cougars over the Seahawks on Thursday, March 28.

Coastal Bend jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first but LSCPA put together two in the first, one in the second and three in the third for a 6-3 lead. Coastal Bend added six in the fourth for a 9-6 advantage but the Seahawks scored three in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game at 9-9.

CBC picked up a run in the top of the fifth but the Hawks were unable to answer over the final three innings.

The Seahawks managed 13 hits in the game with six extra-base hits, including three home runs. Madeline Stone had two doubles and Rebecca DeLome had a two-base hit and a home run. Taylor Frederick and Britni Hunt also had homers.

Stone and DeLome were 3 for 4 in the game, while Bailey Crorey and Frederick were 2 for 4. Crorey, DeLome and Hunt each had stolen bases.

Kassandra Vargas worked the first 3.2 innings on the hill, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Jessica Saenz threw 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with three walks.
