Cougars Shutout in Season Opener

Cougars Shutout in Season Opener

The Coastal Bend College Baseball team kicked off its 2018 campaign this afternoon hosting Region XIV foe Wharton County Junior College at Joe Hunter Field.  The Pioneers struck first scoring two runs of Cougar starting pitcher Micheal Dinsdale in the opening inning.

The Cougar's first batter of the season Joel Rodriguez on with a smash to short was mishandled by the Pioneers.  That split second bobble was more than enough for the speedy Rodriguez who easily beat out the throw to first.  Those good feelings wouldn't last long as Rodriguez was picked off two batters later.  Dinsdale pitched well, before giving way to Colton Getschmann, in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Getschmann got his man to close the inning and preventing any additional damage.

The Pioneers got to Getschman in the top of seventh inning, chasing him from the game.  Jacob Williamson came on and couldn't hold the Pioneers from crossing home plate twice more.  The Cougars had a chance in the bottom of the seventh after getting two aboard on walks after their lead off hitter struck out.  The fourth Cougar batter of the inning grounded into a game ending 4-6-3 double play.

The Cougar offense was stymied all day, managing just Rodriguez single in the first inning.
