A Tale of Two Games For Coastal Bend Baseball

On a nice, spring Wednesday afternoon, Coastal Bend faced against Schreiner University JV for a double header. Bo Gonzales received the start in the first game of the double header and it was his first start of the season on the mound.

The Cougars come out swinging as every hitter in the lineup for Coastal Bend reached first base safely. Jordan Gochenour lead the teams in RBI's with three and also took a pitch deep to left field for a homerun. Josh Burnett would collect two RBI's while also hitting a homerun. Cody Lee smacked a ball to left center field for a solo homerun. Joel Rodriguez hit a double and a single to record two RBI's. Ruben Sepulveda knocked in an RBI off of two singles. Bo Gonzales added an RBI off a double while Kyler Bumstead also hit a double to add to the stat sheet.

In three innings pitched for his outing, Gonzales did not allow a hit, walked three batters and struck out two Mountaineers. Garrison Lange entered the game in the fourth inning and struck out two batters while allowing one hit for his one inning of work. Ethan Summers came in the fifth inning to relieve Lange and was able to get two outs and struck out one batter of the two batters he faced. Arnaldo Garcia entered the game for the last out and rung up a Mountaineer for the last out of the game.

Lange would get the win as Coastal Bend run ruled Schreiner University JV ten to zero for a run rule. The final score was 10-0, Coastal Bend for the first game of the double header.

Tyler Dick started things off for the second game of the Double Header. Dick finished the game with one inning of work and allowed one hit while striking out two Mountaineers. Hayden Borden entered the game in the second inning and struck out the side while pitching one inning for the Cougars. Mason Foster relieved Borden for the third inning striking out a batter and walking a man for his one inning. Will Lennon entered the game in the fourth inning and struck out the side, making quick work of the Mountaineer batters. Anthony Munoz also saw action on the bump, striking out two batters and walking one hitter for the fifth inning.

The game would get interesting when Connor Kimball entered the game in the sixth inning as he allowed four earned runs from three hits during his outing. Colton Getschmann came in to relieve Kimball and allowed two runs to score, only one of which counted as an Earned Run. Getshmann settled in and struck out four batters during his two inning performance.

The Cougars would be forced to rally behind a six to two deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Mountaineers gained momentum and lead by four runs. Coastal Bend would score four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the ball game up at six runs apiece as they would not be deterred and steal the momentum back from the Mountaineers. After Getschmann's effective and efficient work from the mound, CBC looked to win in walk-off fashion. Bumstead was able to hit a single and be the game winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mitchell Sexton was able to get to first base by drawing a walk. Rodriguez would hit a single to the Mountaineer shortstop for the game winning RBI and with the game being tied with two outs, Head Coach Brian Bauerle sent Bumstead home, forcing the shortstop to make a play at the plate that ultimately did not happen.

Coastal Bend capped off a four run comeback to beat Schreiner University 7-6. The Cougars have now won seven games in a row and eight out of their last ten games.

The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday, March 4th against Ridgewater College (Minnesota) at 2:00 PM for a double header at Joe Hunter Field.
