Cougars Get Back On Track versus Hilltoppers

Coastal Bend looked to get back on track, after losing four straight games to top ranked opponents in their respective NJCAA Divisions in #6 San Jacinto (one game) and #1 Louisiana State University- Eunice (three game series).  Due to a week layoff of no baseball games due from Mother Nature, Coastal Bend Baseball was set for an earlier Doubleheader at home versus Saint Edward's University.

Game One

Ruben Sepulveda started off the bump for the Cougars to begin the game. Sepulveda was dominant on the mound, limiting the Hilltopper's to only eight hits, while striking out seven batters. Sepulveda's outing was a strong six and two thirds of an inning, allowing four runs in the ball game, but only one run was earned.

The Cougar bats were able to support Sepulveda's pitching performance, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Jordan Gochenour took the opposing pitching from Saint Edward's deep to right center field for a three run home run to take the lead 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. After the three run third inning, Coastal Bend scored two runs in each of the next two innings. Kyler Bumstead recorded two doubles while also notching in an rbi. Mitchell Sexton also scored two Cougars by hitting a single. Bo Gonzales hit a single, while Jared Irvine knocked in two singles for the game.

As the Hilltoppers attempted to make a comeback, with a three run rally in the seventh inning, Mason Foster entered the game for Coastal Bend. Foster recorded his third save of the season, striking out the only batter he faced. Sepulveda earned his fifth win of the season.

Game Two

The Cougars ended their four game losing skid, by earning a victory against Saint Edward's University JV in game one of the doubleheader.

Marco Becerril received the nod for Coastal Bend for the night cap of the doubleheader. Becerril pitched a six complete innings for his outing, recording three strikeouts, allowing only one run. The Hilltoppers managed eight hits off the 22 times they faced Becerril.

Gonzales hit a double to collect an rbi for the game finishing two for three at the dish. Tyler Dick drew two walks and stole a base on the game while also collecting an rbi off a triple. Joel Rodriguez and Bumstead also collected rbi's to bring the Cougars run total to four on the contest.

With Coastal Bend up 4-1 against Saint Edwards, Foster entered the game in the seventh inning to relieve Becerril and shut down the Hilltoppers, to earn his fourth save of the season.
