Beeville, Tx- Coastal Bend Baseball squared off against Saint Edward's University junior varsity team on Wednesday, April 4th for a double header at Joe Hunter Field. The Cougars would be seeking to get back in the win column, following losses in recent games.
Making his fourth start on the mound this season, Left Hander, Josh Mendez received the nod from the CBC coaching staff. Mendez pitched four and two thirds of an inning for his performance, allowing only one earned run off two hits and striking out five batters.
The Cougars would score the games first run in the Bottom of the First inning. Following a scoreless Second inning, the Hilltoppers hit a solo home run to tie the ball game up at 1-1.
In the Bottom of the Fourth inning, Coastal Bend reclaimed the lead, scoring one run in the inning. Luis Martinez entered the ball game in the Top of the Fifth inning to relieve Mendez. Martinez and company escaped a bases loaded threat from the Hilltoppers by getting an opposing batter to fly out for the final out.
During the Bottom of the Fifth inning, CBC busted the game open after a series of Singles and Doubles from the team to score nine runs. The Cougars wound up run-ruling the Hilltoppers in five innings, 11-1.
Coastal Bend Designated Hitter, Cooper Coe lead the team with three RBI's for the game by hitting a bases clearing Double. Center Fielder, Kody Kolb recorded two RBI's off a Double. First Baseman, Kyle McShaffry batted 1.000 for game one, hitting a Single and a Double with an RBI. Catcher, Ronnie Bailey Jr., Third Baseman, Bo Gonzales, Left Fielder, JB Trees and Second Baseman, Kyle McMahan each recorded an RBI Single during their plate appearances.
Mendez notched his second win of the season for Coastal Bend.
For the second game of the day, Coastal Bend decided to go with Left Handed Pitcher, Nolan Cox on the bump. Cox pitched extremely well for his outing, only allowed three hits in four innings of work while striking out five Hilltoppers.
The hitting barrage continued for the Cougars as they scored five runs in the bottom half of the First inning.
After a scoreless second inning from both ball clubs, the Cougars flexed their muscles yet again. This time they scored six runs in the Bottom of the Third inning.
Moving on in the game to the Top of the Fifth inning, Left Handed Pticher, Devin Aguado entered the game to relieve Cox. Aguado surrendered two earned runs of one hit to Saint Ed's.
Relief Pitcher, Trent Sholders came into the game to record the final two outs of the inning.
Leading 11-2 heading to the Bottom half of the Fifth inning, Coastal Bend looked to end the game with another run-rule. With Pinch Hitter on base, Ricky Garcia would score the game ending run at Mitchell Kalinowski's at bat.
The Cougars won the game 12-2, sweeping the visiting Hilltoppers.
CBC Right Fielder and CBC Shortstop, Kyler Bumstead and Bret Copeland lead the team in RBI's with three a piece. Third Baseman, Bo Gonzales knocked in an RBI off his Double as did Catcher, Cooper Coe. Center Fielder, Kody Kolb, First Baseman, Kyle McShaffry and Left Fielder, JB Trees, also recorded RBI Singles during the game. Pinch Hitters, Joseph Anaya and Mitchell Kalinowski both recorded RBI's during their appearances in the batter's box.
Cox recieved the win, his third victory of the season.
Coastal Bend Baseball will be playing a double header in Kerrville, Tx on Thursday, April 4th agianst Schreiner University JV. The Cougars currently hold a 16-22 record on the season.
