Brenham, Tx- On Monday, April 29th the Coastal Bend baseball program traveled to Brenham, Tx for an afternoon affair against the Blinn College Buccaneers.
The first game of the doubleheader would be a combined pitching duel for both clubs. Pitching by committee seemed to be the trend of the game as both, CBC and Blinn utilized 12 pitchers during the game.
Left Handed Pitcher, Josh Mendez started the game on the hill for CBC. Mendez pitched one inning of work allowing one hit, walking two batters and recording one strikeout. Luis Martinez replaced Mendez on the mound for the Second inning. Martinez struckout two batters while giving up two hits for his one inning performance.
As the game entered the Third inning with the game still scoreless, Arnaldo Garcia entered the the game on the bump to relieve Martinez. Garcia pitched one complete inning recording one walk and one strikout for his outing.
During the Top of the Fourth inning, CBC Third Baseman hit a Solo Home Run, as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead.
In the Bottom of the Fourth inning, Relief Pitcher, Mason Foster replaced Garcia. Foster pitched one inning while recording one strikeout.
With the game moving on, the Coastal Bend coaching staff made another pitching change. This time Clayton Glover would come into the game for Foster. Glover struckout a Blinn batter while walking two others for his one inning of work.
Following another scoreless inning, Spencer Wallace made an appearance on the mound for the Cougars. Wallace gave up two hits during his one inning.
For the Bottom of the Seventh inning, CBC Closer, Trent Sholders entered the game for a save oppoertunity. Sholders earned his 10th Save of the season while striking out two batters to end the game in favor of CBC, 1-0. Mason Foster would be the winning pitcher for Coastal Bend, earning his second Win of the season.
The Cougars collectively strung together five hits on the game.
Game Two
In game two of the doubleheader, the Cougars eyed a sweep from the Blinn Buccaneers having momentum for the win.
Bo Gonzales recieved the nod to start on the mound for CBC.
Coastal Bend jumped out ahead to a 1-0 lead in the Top of the First. However, Blinn responded with a run of their own to tie the game up, 1-1 after one complete inning. Gonzales allowed one hit and surrendered one earned run for his one inning outing.
After a scoreless Second inning for CBC, the Bucs broke the 1-1 tie, taking the lead 2-1. Left Handed Pitcher, Nolan Cox replaced Gonzales on the bump. Cox gave up two hits and one earned run for his performance.
For the Third inning, Pitcher, Cody Vega made an appearance on the mound. Vega gave up two hits, but not before strikingout the side.
In the Top of the Fourth, CBC scored two runs to lead 3-2. The Big Lefty, Will Lennon entered the ballgame to replace Vega. Lennon allowed one hit and one earned run for his inning of work. The Bucs tied the game back up in the Bottom of the inning.
The Cougars answered back in the Top of the Fifth inning with another run, to go up 4-3. As the game headed to the bottom half of the inning, Ricky Garcia replaced Lennon on the hill for CBC. Garcia surrendered one hit and two earned runs while strikingout two batters.
The Buccaneers offense caught fire, scoring a combined five runs in the Fifth and Sixth innings to lead 8-4. Christain Garcia and Christian Isenhour both completed the Bottom of the Sixth inning for CBC. Garcia gave up two hits and two earned runs, while Isenhour surrendered one hit and one earned run.
Coastal Bend attempted to rally, but fell short. CBC scored one run in the Top of the Seventh before falling to Blinn, 8-5.
CBC First Baseman, Kyle McShaffry hit a Double for an RBI during his lone plate appearance. Pitcher and Designated Hitter, Gonzales and Shortstop, Bret Copeland each hit Doubles for the game. Third Baseman, Joseph Anaya recorded two Doubles during his three appearances at the dish.
The Cougars will be at Home on Thursday, May 2nd vs Tyler Junior College. Coastal Bend and Tyler will be playing game five of a seven game series for the Region XIV Division III Conference title. First Pitch is 2:00 PM at Joe Hunter Field. The winner of the series will host a Divisional Tournament that will take place on May 10th- May 12th.
