Cougars Split Home Doubleheader Versus Hilltoppers

Beeville, Tx- The Coastal Bend College baseball team hosted St. Edwards University on Tuesday for doubleheader. The Cougars aimed to build off their two game win streak from the week before with victories over Temple College and Panola College. CBC watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 13-7 loss to the Hilltopers. 

After taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Coastal Bend dropped a five spot in the top of the second. CBC was able to trim the 5-2 deficit in the bottom half of the second inning by scoring two runs. St. Edwards batted the Cougars around again in tht top of the fourth with four runs to hold a 9-4 lead. 

Nicloas Hernandez was on the pitcher's mound for Coastal Bend College Cougars Varsity. Hernandez went two innings, allowing five runs on four hits.  Ian SextonNicholas MunizEric Elizondo, and Cobe Reeves each entered the game as relief, throwing two innings, one inning, one inning, and one inning respectively.

Moving to the fifth ining, the Hilltoppers added a run to extend their lead to 10-4. The Cougars slowly started to chip away at the St. Edwards lead by scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth. 

The Hilltoppers produced three more runs late in the game to put the game out of reach for a potential comeback for the Cougars. 

The Cougars hit two home runs on the day. Ryan Davenport went yard in the first inning. Ben Hovda had a four bagger in the sixth inning. Davenport led Coastal Bend with two hits in three at bats. 


As the Cougars fell in game one of the double-dip with the Hilltoppers, they had their eyes set on bouncing back into the win column.  Coastal Bend snagged a late lead and defeated St. Edwards, 9-7 on for the late game.  

The Cougars earned the victory despite allowing St. Edwards University to score five runs in the first inning. Jacob Guzman was the winning pitcher for Coastal Bend. The righthander went two innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out three and walking one.

A number of pitchers entered the game as relief, with Jose GonzalezMarco MartinezJavy Rios, and Isaiah Rodriguez all securing outs and ultimately the victory.  Rodriguez recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Coastal Bend. 

Meredith lasted one inning, allowing four hits and five runs smacked one home run on the day. Selvin Anderson had a homer in the first inning. CBC collected ten hits on the day.  Seigrist and Anderson each managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend. Anderson and Zach Seigrist lead the team with two RBI's. Keagan Solomon , Ben Hovda, Brandon Gonzales, Isaiah Aguilar, and  Victor Armendariz each recorded an RBI in the game. 

CBC found themselves in a dogfight, down 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Coastal Bend's, Zach Seigrist singled on a 3-1 count, scoring two runs.

Anderson and Seigrist all had two hits to lead the Cougars.  Coastal Bend was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.

The Cougars improve to 3-3 on the young season, moving them to .500 . Coastal Bend hosts Western Oklahoma State College for a four game weekend series beginning on Friday, February 18th. First pitch is at 3:00 PM at Joe Hunter Field.
