Cougars Breakeven During 4 Game Series Versus #20 Pioneers

Beeville, TX-  The Coastal Bend College baseball program hosted #20 Western Oklahoma State College of NJCAA Division II this past weekend for a four game series at Joe Hunter Field. The homestand would be a good test for the Cougars with Region XIV Conference play looming.

Coastal Bend fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 12-6 loss to Western Oklahoma State College on Friday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Cougars  did collect seven hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Western Oklahoma State College had 15 hits on the way to victory.

Western Oklahoma State College got things started in the first inning when an error scored one run. The Pioneers then capitalized on walks and errors from CBC to jump out with a four run lead. 

The Cougars were able to trim the Pioneer deficit in half by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first. Coastal Bend hung up another run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second to make it a 4-3 ball game. 

In the bottom of the third inning the Cougars took the lead with two base-runners crossing the plate. That lead would be brief as Western Oklahoma scored two runs in the top of the fourth and two more runs in the top of the, holding Coastal Bend scoreless in both frames to go up, 8-5.

The Cougars were able to score one run in the bottom of the sixth inning but were held scoreless for the remainder of the ball game. The Pioneers added a few runs late in the game for insurance purposes as they went on to win, 12-6. 

Johnny Garza took the loss for Coastal Bend College. Garza lasted four innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out four.

The Cougars hit two home runs on the day. Selvin Anderson went deep in the second inning. Victor Armendariz had a solo homer in the sixth inning. Ben Hovda went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend in hits.


Looking to bounce back on Saturday, the Cougars would be playing a doubleheader versus the Pioneers. It would be games two and three of the four game series. 

Coastal Bend took the lead late in the game in a 6-3 victory over Western Oklahoma game two on Saturday. The game was tied at two with CBC batting in the bottom of the fifth when  Damian Rodriguez to hit into a fielder's choice, but two runs scored.

The Cougars got things moving in the first inning, when Keagan Solomon hit a lead-off solo homer. Right Handed Pitcher, Preston Allen toed the rubber for Coastal Bend. Allen allowed six hits and two runs over five innings, striking out three.

Logan Henderson entered the ball game to relieve Allen in the top of the sixth. Henderson allowed three hits while striking out four Pioneers for his outing. 

Coastal Bend launched two home runs on the day. CBC First Baseman, Eric Martinez had a long ball in the fourth inning

The Cougars totaled six hits in the game. Selvin Anderson and Martinez both managed multiple hits for CBC. Anderson hit two Doubles for the game. Damian Rodriguez and Anderson each knocked in two RBI's while Keagan Solomon and Martinez each collected one. 

While Allen received credit for his second win of the season, Henderson also recorded his second save for the Cougars. 


Coastal Bend nabbed the lead late in the game in a 4-3 victory over Western Oklahoma for game three. The game was tied at three with the Cougars batting in the bottom of the sixth when Mateo Saenz singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Western Oklahoma scored three runs in the sixth inning, but Coastal Bend still managed to pull out the victory. 

Cobe Reeves started the game for the Cougars. The lefty pitcher allowed three hits and two runs over five and a third innings, striking out eight batters.

Coastal Bend tallied one home run on the day. Eric Martinez went for the long ball in the sixth inning. Martinez produced three RBI's for the game. 

 

In a relief appearance, Ian Sexton entered the game in the sixth inning to relieve Reeves. Sexton surrendered one hit and one earned run while striking out two opposing hitters. Sexton and company held the Pioneers off and would earn his first victory of the season. 


Heading into Sunday, the Cougars were one game away from winning the series. The Pioneers on the other hand had other plans.

Coastal Bend fell behind early and couldn't come back despite a late resurgence in a 14-10 loss to Western Oklahoma State College on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Cougars did collect 14 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Western Oklahoma State College had 15 hits on the way to victory.

The Pioneers came out swinging, scoring three runs in the top of the first. CBC would knock in one run in the bottom of the first inning. The Pioneers scored a total of 11 runs in the next four innings to lead 14-2 after five complete innings.

Coastal Bend College  scored three runs in the ninth inning.  Keagan Solomon and Ryan Davenport all contributed in the big inning with RBI's.

Eric Elizondo took the loss for Coastal Bend. Elizondo went one and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs on five hits and striking out two.

Western Oklahoma State College tallied five home runs on the day.

The Cougars scattered 14 hits in the game.  Damian Rodriguez, Solomon, Brandon Gonzales, and Scott Siebenthall all had multiple hits for Coastal Bend.  Rodriguez went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the  Cougars in hits.

Coastal Bend moves to 5-5 on the season and will begin Region XIV Conference play on Tuesday, February 22nd. The Cougars are set to host #3 San Jacinto College for a nine inning ball game. First pitch is at 2:00 PM at Joe Hunter Field.
