CBC Hardball Falls to Wharton County; Lose Three Out of Four

The Coastal Bend College baseball nabbed the lead late in the game in a 9-8 victory over Wharton County Junior College on Tuesday.  Wharton County Junior College scored five runs in the seventh inning, but Coastal Bend College still managed to pull out the victory. 

The Pioneers fired up the offense in the first inning, with back to back solo home runs.Coastal Bend cut into the WCJC lead in the bottom of the first by scoring one run. Wharton quickly added to their lead by crossing the plate to go up 3-1. 

In the bottom half of the third frame, the Cougars were able to string a few hits together to knot up the game at three runs apiece. Following a couple of scoreless innings from both clubs the game would remain tied up.

Coastal Bend College scored three runs in the sixth inning.  Garrett Whitaker and Ben Hovda each had RBIs in the big inning.

To follow up the three run scoring output by the Cougars, the Pioneers brought out their bats in the top of the seventh to regain the lead and produce five runs. Coastal Bend trailed 8-6 after seven complete innings.

As the CBC held off the Pioneers in the top of the eighth inning they looked to rally. The Cougars were able to make it a one-run ball game by crossing the plate for their seventh run of the game. 

Following another scoreless inning by the Pioneers, the Cougars had their work cut out for them. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Coastal Bend College tied things up at eight when Alex Garza drew a walk, scoring one run.

Tied up, 8-8 and the bases loaded with one out, things looked to favor the Cougars. Coastal Bend ended up capitalizing on a wild pitch, scoring the game winning run. 

Preston Allen started the game for Coastal Bend College . The righthander allowed nine hits and seven runs over six innings, striking out five

Jaden Meredith pitched Coastal Bend to victory. The righty lasted three innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two.

Coastal Bend College racked up 13 hits.  Victor Armendariz, Hovda, Eric Martinez, and Damian Rodriguez each managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend College .  Hovda and Armendariz each collected three hits to lead Coastal Bend College .


For the second game of the four game series, Coastal Bend aimed for their second victory.  Though, CBC couldn't quite keep up with Wharton County Junior College and fell 20-4 on Thursday.

Coastal Bend College got on the board in the first inning.  Eric Martinez grounded out, scoring one run.

Wharton County Junior College pulled away for good with 13 runs in the second inning. The Pioneers came out swinging and knocked out the Cougars for game two. 

The hits kept on coming for CBC, as WCJC hung up another seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. Coastal Bend went on to cross the plate three more times, before being run-ruled, 20-4.

Eric Elizondo took the loss for Coastal Bend College . The righthander surrendered seven runs on five hits over one and one-third innings, striking out two.

Coastal Bend's Garrett Whitaker and Martinez eached recorded an RBI, while Alex Garza knocked in two Cougar runs. Ben HovdaVictor Armendariz, Garza, and Martinez all had one hit to lead Coastal Bend College.


Game three of the four game series would be a close one. Coastal Bend College fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 2-1 loss to Wharton County Junior College on Saturday.

Wharton County Junior College scored on an error and a single in the first inning. The Pioneers added another run in the inning to go up, 2-0.

Coastal Bend College launched one home run on the day. Victor Armendariz hit a dinger in the fifth inning to keep the game close.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Wharton County Junior College pitchers struck out six, while Coastal Bend College sat down three.

Cobe Reeves took the loss for Coastal Bend College . The lefty went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three.

Eric Martinez, Armendariz, Damian Rodriguez, and Alex Garza each managed one hit to lead Coastal Bend College. Garza hit for a Double during the game. 


For the series finale, the Cougars looked to break even with the Pioneers. CBC couldn't keep up with Wharton County and fell 13-5 on Saturday.

The ball game started off with both teams going scoreless in their first couple of innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the third that the first run of the game occurred. Wharton County touched home plate six times in the frame to lead the Cougars.

CBC was able to cut into the Pioneer deficit in the top of the fourth inning by scoring twice. Wharton County then added to their lead with one run to make it a 7-2 score after four complete innings.

After another set of scoreless frames from both clubs, the Pioneers again added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh to go up, 8-2 over the Cougars.

Coastal Bend College put up three runs in the eighth inning.  Coastal Bend College big bats were led by Ryan DavenportDamian Rodriguez, and Victor Armendariz, all driving in runs in the frame.

To follow up the scoring output by the Cougars, the Pioneers hung up five runs on the scoreboard to win the game by a final score, 13-5.

Ian Sexton took the loss for Coastal Bend College . The righthander lasted three innings, allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out four.

Ben Hovda led Coastal Bend College with two hits in two at bats.  Coastal Bend College was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Selvin Anderson had the most chances in the field with eight.

Coastal Bend moves to an overall record of 12-19 for the season and 4-14 in Region XIV Conference play. The Cougars will travel to Kerrville, Tx for a nine inning ball game versus Schreiner University JV on Wednesday, March 30th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Bob Henry Field.
