Cougars Take One Out of Three from Dolphins

Alvin, TxCoastal Bend College watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 8-4 loss to Alvin Community College on Wednesday, April 13th. Alvin Community College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. 

The Dolphins continued to hold the Cougars off the scoreboard in the top of the second inning.  They then tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up, 4-0.

Coastal Bend finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning by crossing the plate once in the frame. Alvin then answered back with a run of their own to keep it a four run ball game at 5-1.

The Cougars rallied late in the game, for a combined three runs in the seventh and eighth innings but ran out of Outs. Alvin ended up completing the game with a 8-4 victory over Coastal Bend.

Jaden Meredith took the loss for CBC . Meredith lasted seven and two-thirds innings, allowing 15 hits and eight runs while striking out three.

Coastal Bend racked up 11 hits on the day.  Brandon GonzalesGarrett WhitakerKeagan Solomon, and Victor Armendariz each had multiple hits for the Cougars. Whitaker and Gonzales all had three hits to lead Coastal Bend.  


On Good Friday, April 15th with the series shifting to Beeville for the remainder of the series, the Cougars looked to get some home cooking going at Joe Hunter Field for the doubleheader. Game one flew by as the Dolphins took control from the beginning with a 11-1 win over the CBC. In game two, Coastal Bend flipped the script on Alvin and returned the favor with a 12-0 victory.

Game One

Alvin Community College came out swinging to start off the doubleheader. The Dolphins scored a combined 6 runs in the first two innings, holding the Cougars scoreless. 

Following a scoreless third inning from both clubs, the Dolphins again crossed the home plate three times in the fourth inning to extend their lead, 9-0. The Cougar were able to put a couple of hits together but could not score in the bottom of the fourth. 

In the top of the fifth inning, the Dolphins tacked on two runs to make it an 11-0 ball game over the Cougars. Coastal Bend finally scored a run in the fifth but it was too little too late, as the game conculded in a 11-1 run-rule in favor of Alvin. 

Coastal Bend Righty, Preston Allen started the game on the bump for the Cougars, going four innings. Allen allowed eight hits, and eight earned runs for his outing. 

CBC Third Baseman, Damian Rodriguez compiled two doubles, a walk and an RBI for the Cougars. Ben Hovda, Keagan Solomon and Rodriguez each stole a base in the game. 

 

Game Two

Clearly the Cougar bats just needed an extended warm-up as they were red hot from the first pitch of the game two as they crossed the plate nine times in the opening stanza.  The Cougars rolled through three Dolphin pitchers, batting around including a Ryan Davenport home run to deep left center field.

In the bottom of the third of the inning Alex Garza scored CBC's 10th run with a blast over the left center field fence.  Catcher Selvin Anderson took the first pitch saw and launched it somewhere deep in the South Texas brush 400 to 500 feet from home plate in one biggest bombs in Joe Hunter Field history to move the score to 11-0.

The fourth inning brought more of the same as the Cougars used a two walks and a single to load the bases to see a wild pitch to allow the Cougars 12th run of the game.

Cobe Reeves got the start for the Cougars and pitched a gem holding the Dolphins to four hits, striking out six for the quick victory.  The Cougar defense showed flashes of the leather as the well turning two double plays, including first baseman Eric Martinez nailing the lone Dolphin runner at home.  

CBC's Davenport and Garza lead the offensive power surge with three RBI's. Victor Armendariz produced two RBI's with a double. Chrsitian Terranova, Anderson, and Martinez eached collected an RBI for the Cougars. 

The Cougars move to 17-26 overall and 7-21 in Region XIV Conference play. Coastal Bend has a pivotal four game series this coming week against Blinn College as both teams are fighting for postseason play.
