Cougars Drop Season Finale to Pioneers

Wharton, TX-  In a crucial three game series for Coastal Bend baseball, they would travel and face Wharton County Junior College on Thursday, April 28th.  With hopes of making the Region XIV Tournament, the Cougars would lose a tough one to begin the series.

Both teams were strong on the mound, but Wharton County Junior College was just a little bit better at the dish.  The Pioneers racked up nine hits but only produced one run. That lone run would prove to be enough to beat CBC, 1-0.

Coastal Bend struggled in the batters box all game but managed to get runners on base by drawing walks. The only bright spot for Coastal Bend College at the plate were two singles by Damian Rodriguez. Rodriguez led Coastal Bend College with two hits in four at bats.

Jaden Meredith started the game for Coastal Bend College and recorded 21 outs. Meredith took the loss for Coastal Bend College . Meredith allowed nine hits and one run over seven innings, striking out two and walking one.


Beeville, TX-  Moving on to game two, the series would shift to Joe Hunter Field.

Again, both ball clubs would provide great pitching on the mound, but Wharton County Junior College continued to out-hit Coastal Bend. The Pioneers scored two runs in the game off five hits. 

Cobe Reeves threw a complete game for Coastal Bend College. Reeves allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out 11. The lefty ended up taking the loss for the Cougars.

CBC Left Fielder, Ryan Davenport lead the fifth inning off with a Double, but the Cougars failed to bring him in to score. Davenport recorded the only hit of the game for CBC.


For the regular season finale, Coastal Bend fought back after falling down by five runs by the fourth inning. The comeback fell just short though, in a 6-5 defeat to Wharton County Junior College on Saturday evening.  Coastal Bend College put up five runs in the failed comeback. Eric Martinez, Martinez,  David Lopez, and Keagan Solomon powered the rally with RBIs.

Coastal Bend College fell behind early in the loss. Wharton County Junior College scored on a double by Lee and a double by Evans in the first inning.

In the first inning, Wharton County Junior College got their offense started by touching Home plate three times. The Pioneers would extend their lead in both the third and forth inning to make it a 5-0 lead. 

The Cougars finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning by scoring a run and again in the bottom of the sixth. Coastal Bend College put up five runs in the failed comeback. Eric Martinez, Martinez,  David Lopez, and Keagan Solomon powered the rally with RBIs.

Preston Allen took the loss for Coastal Bend College. Allen allowed five hits and four runs over three innings, striking out two. A plethora of CBC Pitchers saw action on the hill for the last game of the season; Eric Elizondo, Javy Rios, Ian Sexton, Logan Henderson, Nicolas Hernandez and Isaiah Rodriguez each pitched one inning. 

Coastal Bend College hit one home run on the day. Martinez had a four bagger in the fifth inning. Martinez led Coastal Bend College with two hits in three at bats.  Coastal Bend College was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Selvin Anderson made the most plays with six.

The Cougars conclude the 2022 campaign with an overall record of 20-30 and 10-25 in conference play.
