Roadrunners Outlast Cougars at Home

Beeville, Tx- Five Region XIV Conference games remained, prior to Saturday's Home matchup with Angelina College. With the regular season nearing to a conclusion, Coastal Bend has been fighting to keep their Regional Tournament hopes alive. 

The first half against Angelina started out well for Coastal Bend. In the opening minutes, both teams traded buckets, until the Cougars started to draw seperation from the Roadrunners. Fastbreak points and Triples were the recipe for CBC. Point Guard Brian Payton and fellow running mate, Royce Hunter helped the team in scoring, leading as much as 18 points in the first half. The Roadrunners would trim their deficit before halftime, as the Cougars took a 40-30 lead into the halftime break. 

After halftime, Angelina began the second half of play by chipping at the Coastal Bend lead. The Cougars had defensive lapses and allowed the Roadrunners to take the lead. After both teams went back forth with the lead, Angelina held a four point lead, 68-64. Big man, Elija Moleon drew a foul call in the paint and made both free throws to cut the deficit to two, 68-66. In the last minute of the ball game, CBC gained possesion from an offensive foul. The Cougars ran a play for Forward, Peyton Hardin which led to an Angelina foul, sending Hardin to the charity strike with eight seconds remaining. After making the first free throw, to only trail by one point, the Cougars missed the second free throw but had a chance of regaining posession for a put back to take the lead, but the Roadrunners snagged the rebound, forcing the Cougars to foul with four seconds left in the game. Angelina would make both free throws to take a 70-67 lead. CBC would call a timeout after the second free throw for one last play. Hunter freed himself up off the inbound from the opposing baseline, and threw up a desperation three pointer from halfcourt that hit the backboard and the front of the rim, before falling out as time expired. 

CBC Center, Moleon lead the Cougars in scoring with 16 points. Moleon grabbed down six boards and blocked two shots during the game. Payton, finished the game with 12 points and had four rebounds to his stat line. Guard, Gerald Thomas added 10 points for the Cougars while compiling five three rebounds, two assists. Hunter chipped in with 10 points while snagging five rebounds and nabbing two steals during the contest.

The Cougars next game will be at Home against Lamar State Port Arthur on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:30 PM.
