Cougars Lose Close One in Regional Tournament

Shreveport, LA- Coastal Bend College Men's Basketball travelled to Louisiana on Tuesday, March 5th for the Region XIV Championship Tournament. The Cougars would face Panola College for the first round matchup. CBC and Panola faced off earlier in the season in Carthage, Tx back in January. In a hard fought game by both teams, the Ponies would edge out the Cougars, 77-69. 

In the first half of play, the Cougars and Ponies would find themselves in a battle, tied at seven with 12:40 minutes left in the half. As the remainder of the half continued, Panola would take the lead, but Coastal Bend would not be far behind as they trailed 25-31 at intermission. 

The second half of play started out well for the Cougars as they went on a 19 to seven run on the Ponies to lead 44-38 with 14:29 left in regulation. CBC would control most of the second half, with a nine point lead at time in the game. The Ponies would cut into the Cougar lead, and make it a two point game, 62-60 in favor of CBC with 2:12 left in the contest. A triple from Guard, Royce Hunter would put the Cougars up by three points, 65-62. 

Following a quick bucket from the Ponies, the Cougars would run a play and draw a foul call. Coastal Bend would split a pair of free throws to lead, 66-64. Panola would score on the insuing possesion by making a three point play the old fashion way to take a 66-67 lead over CBC. After a Cougar timeout, Coastal Bend would run a play but come up empty, forcing to foul. The Ponies would make both free throws to go up 66-69 with 5.8 seconds left. A quick three point attempt would come up short for the Cougars which resulted in another foul call for Panola. The Cougars would end up losing, 70-66 to the Panola College Ponies. 

Coastal Bend Guard, Royce Hunter would lead the team in scoring with 20 points while snagging seven rebounds. Guard, Charles Callier swished in 12 points to go with his eight rebounds and two assists. Forward, Peyton Hardin contributed nine points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars. Point Guard, Brian Payton scored eight points while recording four assists and two boards. Big Man, Elijah Moleon had three points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Kenny Brown helped out off the bench with four points and seven rebounds. 

Coastal Bend wraps up their season with an overall record of 8-17 while finishing 4-13 in conference play. The Cougars have made the Region XIV Tournament in back to back seasons under Head Coach, Carliss Robinson.
