Beeville, TX — The Coastal Bend Cougars fell in its season opener to Ranger College Rangers in the 2024 season opener, 72-62. The Cougars made a late comeback push cutting the Rangers lead to 8 points with four minutes left in the game, but ran out of steam as the Rangers were able to put the game away.
It was a rough shooting night for both teams as neither team could establish a rhythm. The Cougars finished the night shooting 22 percent from the field, 12 percent from three. Though shooting was an issue, the Cougar defense was able to limit the Rangers on shooting as well, allowing only 38 percent from the field and 17 percent from three.
Both teams came out the gate slow on offense as the pace was quick early on in the first half. The Cougars could never really establish momentum on offense, having to rely mostly on the free throw line. The Cougars dug themselves a hole being down double digits for the majority of the first half. Sophomore Forward Keagan Moncrief was a difference maker in the first half as the Rangers didn't have an answer to contain the Forward. Freshman Guard Avion Jackson was aggressive with the ball, attacking the rim and getting opportunities at the free throw line. Jackson led both teams with 18 free throw attempts making 13. Jackson led the Cougars in scoring with 18 points.
The slow start was detrimental to the Cougars in the first half as they trailed 35-20 at halftime. The Cougars played the second half with more energy and consistency. They continued being aggressive to the hoop, getting the Rangers in foul trouble early on. They were able to find their shooting stroke more so, hitting a few big threes by Jackson, Sophomore Guard Jordan Lambert, and Freshman Forward Quinton Hairston. Moncrief continued his stellar play in the second half, finishing with a double double, his first of the season (14 points, 10 rebounds). The Cougars defense stiffened up, slowing the Rangers offense and allowing their offense to come up with big buckets. The Cougars cut the lead to as low as eight points. Getting big stops and turnovers, making the game interesting. However, fouls late hindered that comeback, with the Rangers taking advantage at the foul line. The Cougars couldn't get enough baskets late and fall just short.
The Cougars will compete in the Blue Bell Classic at Blinn College on November 15th. They will take on Cedar Valley College, with tip off at 5:00pm.
