Soccer Knocks Off Northeast Texas in First Round of Region XIV Playoffs

The first time Luke Wheeldon and Josh Womack played a game on Cougar Field, they would open their Coastal Bend College careers with a 2-1 loss to Laredo Community College.  Wednesday afternoon, both did their part to make certain they went out as winners, as the Cougar soccer team shut-out the Northeast Texas Community College Eagles 4-0 in the opening round of the Region XIV playoffs.

The Eagles came out attacking, sending all 10 players into their offensive zone, but the Cougar defense would hold strong limiting the Eagle attack to only four shots on goal the entire match.  Offensively, the Cougars did a masterful job of moving the ball around and using a balanced attack.  Manuel Garcia registered the first - and turns out to be the deciding - goal at the 8:52 mark of the game with an unassisted goal beyond the Eagle goalies left hand.  Aaron Rymer would be the next Cougar to score take an a deflected save attempt and finding the back of the net moments into the second half.  Drew Matthews was next for CBC as he took a header from Jack Sims, and headed it himself above the goalies gloves for the third Cougar tally of the day.

Things got physical after that, as the Eagles expressed more than a little frustration with the 3-0 score.  Cooler heads prevailed after a flurry of yellow-cards, but the exchange wasn't enough to stop Marcus Dibble from blasting another defensive deflection into the back of the net to round out the scoring for CBC.

With the win, CBC moves to 12-6 on the season - the second highest win total in program history - and a Saturday match with Tyler Junior College in Tyler.  The winner will advance to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament hosted next week in Mississippi.

For Wheeldon and Womack, they move their career win total to 26 wins versus 12 losses, with at least one more game to play.
