Cougars Roar on Sophomore Day

Sophomore Day has been an annual occurrence since the soccer program was founded over a decade ago.  However no Sophomore Day before had the same the feel as the one Friday.  The #15 ranked Cougars had played themselves into a position never before experienced - an opportunity to win the Region XIV Regular Season Championship with a win over Blinn College.

The Cougars attacked early and often, finally getting on the scoreboard in the 10th minute of the game when freshman defensive back Charlie Ward put a header just past the Bucaneers' goalie off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.  The defense would make that lead hold through the end of the first-half.

The Buccaneers would score first in the second half with a looping kick that found its way over and behind starting goalie, freshman Harry Scott to tie the score at 1-1.  That would be the only blemish on Scott's day as he easily scooped up the other three shots he faced.  The defensive effort of the Cougars was stifling with sophomores Donal Rahill, Ross Murphy, and Ryan Lewis pressuring the Buccaneers into mistake after mistake.

The 1-1 tie would end when sophomore Gabriel Campora found the left foot of Thomas Williams for the go-ahead and game winning goal.  A jubilent Head Coach Adam Butler shared, "I am so proud of what this team has come together and achieved.  We play with so much energy and heart you can never write us off."

When the horn sounded, the celebration began.  In addition to the regular season championship, the Cougars also locked up home field for at least one round in the up coming Region XIV Championship Tournament.  The Cougars will be the second seed, and will play in just over a week versus a to be determined opponent.

The Regional Championship is the second in Coastal Bend College's history following Baseball's Division III Region XIV Championship in 2019.
