The Cougars started out the match with their high press defense that overwhelmed the Scorpions early on in the match, really bringing their patented physical play. The Cougars were patient early on with the ball and putting most of their focus on counterattacks. After a couple chances early, Aranda broke through with a great defensive play on a Scorpion mistake and getting a 1-v-1 with a good touch, passed the goalkeeper and struck it into the net for the lead in the 21st minute. The Cougars controlled the ball for most of the half from their continuing being stingy defensively, only allowing 3 shots on goal all which were handled by Freshman Goalkeeper Tim Teicher.
"We knew the high pressure could cause their defense to make some mistakes and there it was when we got the opportunity and took advantage to score." Aranda said about his steal and goal. "I saw the opportunity and was aggressive and got the 1v1, which is what I like the most and was able to score."
The Cougars came out on fire in the second half with very aggressive play. The mentality of the team seemed to shift with an attacking set to put the game away. Arranda was able to get his 2nd goal of the match five minutes into the 2nd half. That goal opened the floodgates, as Guerrero would follow three minutes later with his first goal of the match. In what was probably the goal of the match belonged to Paramo, with a free kick a third of the way from the goal, absolutely blasted the ball into the corner of the net for his first goal of the match. The final nail belonged to Dawson who received a long ball, made a move and punched it passed the goalkeeper for the fifth Cougars goal. It was the second time the Cougars had scored five goals against Texas Southmost, and the fifth time this year they have scored at least three goals.
