CBC swept by San Jacinto and Blinn

Beeville, Tx-     Coastal Bend Softball hosted San Jacinto College on Friday, April 12th for a Region XIV Conference double header. The Cougars were hopeful for some home cooking to help them with conference seeding. Both ball clubs played a double header in March, with the Coyotes sweeping CBC.

In game one of the double dip, Coastal Bend fell behind early and could not muster up a comeback against the San Jacinto Coyotes.

Kirstyn Gomez started the game for CBC, throwing six and two-thirds innings for her performance. Amanda Aguirre entered the game to relieve Gomez.

Aguirre went one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on one hit and striking out one. Coastal Bend's, Avery Hearn hit a two run, Homer in the first inning to cut into the Coyotes lead.

Hearn went two for three at the dish with a Walk. San Jac scored a run in the Top of the Third inning and held CBC scoreless until the Fifth inning.

The Cougars scored their third run of the ball game to trail the Coyotes, 4-3. As the game proceeded, San Jac would expand their lead, adding three runs in the Sixth inning and one run in the Top of the Seventh. Coastal Bend fought hard and attempted to close the gap, but runs were difficult to come by. The Coyotes took game one from the Cougars, 8-3.

The Cougars combined for eight hits in the game and struck out seven times. Coastal Bend also left eight runners on base. Madysen Parker recorded an RBI during the game.

Game Two

Coastal Bend watched the game slip away as they could not recover from an early deficit. San Jac took a three run lead on a double in the first inning. The Cougars fell into a 3-0 deficit early in the second game.

CBC struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Coyotes, giving up a total of six runs.

Lefty Pitcher, Amanda Aguirre started the game in the pitcher's circle for CBC. She pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out two batters. Kirstyn Gomez entered the ball game in the Top of the Seventh inning. Gomez threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Runs never came across for the Cougars as they recorded six hits and left four base runners on base.

Catcher, Brianna McKeelKirstie SotoMadysen ParkerVanessa Garces, Annette Cardenas, and Avery Hearn each had one hit for Coastal Bend.

On blustery, warm Saturday in Beeville, the Cougars played host to the Buccaneers of Blinn College for a Region XIV Conference double header.  Blinn, Region XIV South's top team came into the day undefeated in Southern Division play. The Cougar looked to bounce back after dropping back to back games with San Jacinto College the day before.

Game One

The Columbia and Navy jumped out early, with Kirstie Solo banging a double off the center field fence that scored Annette Cardenas and Ashley Soto, both of whom had reach base courtesy of being hit by a pitch.

The Buccaneer offense finally found its stride in the top of the 3rd inning as they plated three runs, before the Cougars could stop the bleeding.  The Cougars would threaten in the third, fourth and sixth innings loading the base each time, but were unable to push another run across the plate.

Kirsten Gomez was brilliant in the circle for the Cougars going the distance, allowing only the three runs in the second inning, on a day that the wind played havoc on the fielders making a routine fly ball an adventure, and leading to seven Cougars being hit by Buccaneer pitches.

Coastal Bend ended up losing a highly contested game, 3-2 to the Bucs.

Third Baseman, Emily Michki and Designated Hitter, Cardenas both went two for three on the game. The Cougars as a team produced eight hits and struck out at the plate eight times while leaving 12 runners on base.

Game Two

Once again CBC struck first as Cardenas hit her 11th home run of the year, bringing home Ashley Soto who was aboard courtesy of a flare to right center.  Cardenas shot rode the strong left to right breeze exiting the field in right center field.

The Buccanneers drew even in the second scoring two, that could have been more if not for stellar catch by centerfielder Vanessa Garces who tracked down a well hit ball, with an over the shoulder streatching catch in right center, then came up firing a strike to second to hold the runners.

The Cougars would retake the lead in the bottom of the third when Garces single to left center, promptly stole second on the next pitch.  Scores on single by Cardenas.

Blinn would retake the lead in impressive fashion in the top of the fifth inning when left handed hitting short stop Sarah Cedillo launched a two-out, moon shot high into the left to right wind and over the right field fence to plate three Buccaneer runs.  The Bucs' pitcher would contain the lead holding the Cougars hitless down the stretch. Coastal Bend wound up losing, 5-3 to Blinn.

Starting Pitcher, Amanda Aguirre pitched five complete innings for CBC. Aguirre allowed three runs to cross the plate, while striking out two batters. Kirstyn Gomez entered the game in the Sixth inning to relieve Aguirre. Gomez finished the game in the circle, pitching two complete innings allowing only one hit and recording one strikeout.

Designated Hitter, Cardenas finished the game with two hits during her three appearances at the dish. Cardenas was the only run producer for the game, collecting three RBI's.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they host Region XIV - South rival Lamar State - Port Arthur for a doubleheader with major playoff implications.  The Cougars shocked the Seahawks back on March 28th in Port Arthur as they made momenmental comebacks in each game to earn the sweep. Saturday will also be Sophomore Day for Coastal Bend. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
