Cougars Set Program Record for Wins; Break Even on Weekend Trip

Galveston, Tx-   On Friday, April 26th, Coastal Bend Softball traveled to Galveston for a Region XIV double header versus the Whitecaps. Owning a 8-10 record in conference play the Cougars aimed to improve in the standings.

The first game of the double header would turn out to be tough for the Coastal Bend batters. The Cougars only recorded one hit during game one. Ultimately losing, 6-0 to the Whitecaps.

The lone bright spot for Coastal Bend was a Single by Emily Michki in the Fourth inning.  Kirstyn Gomez toed the rubber for the Cougars. Gomez pitched five and a third of an inning, allowing six runs on seven hits. Left Handed Pitcher, Amanda Aguirre threw two-thirds of an inning in relief.

 

Game Two

In game two, Coastal Bend dug themselves in a bit of a hole, early on in Game two. Though, the Cougars would continue to fight for the duration for the game, they would fall short in the 3-2 loss to Galveston College. 

The Whitecaps opened up scoring in the first inning by driving in three runs.

Amanda Aguirre was in the circle for the Cougars. Aguirre gave up five hits and three runs over six innings, striking out one batter. The pitching was strong throughout the game as both teams racked up 13 hits in 57 plate appearances.

Coastal Bend racked up eight hits. Vanessa Garces and Avery Hearn each collected multiple hits for the Cougars. Garces led the team with three hits in four at bats. Hearn collected an RBI of two hits for the game. Devon Parsons also recorded an RBI during her plate appearance.


Alvin, Tx-  The Cougars looked to bounce back from Friday's losses as they faced the Alvin Community College Dolphins. LHP, Amanda Aguirre had all the right stuff on Saturday for Coastal Bend, pitching a shutout. The Cougars proceed to beat Alvin Community College, 1-0.

While the pitching was strong on both sides. CBC was able to get things moving in the second inning, when Ashley Soto Singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Aguirre led things off on the rubber for Coastal Bend. She allowed five hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking one batter.

Felicity MataVanessa GarcesAshley Soto, Avery Hearn, Myla Longoria, and Emily Michki each collected one hit for the Cougars.

 

Game Two 

Coastal Bend eyed a sweep, heading into the second game versus Alvin.  Right Handed Pitcher, Kirstyn Gomez received the start in the circle and didn't allow a single run against the Dolphins, throwing a complete game shutout to help lead the Cougars to a 9-0 victory on Saturday.

The Cougars were able to get an early start as they jumped out to an early, 4-0 lead.  After opening the first inning with a bang, CBC went on to secure the victory thanks to five runs in the Fourth inning. Coastal Bend applied pressure on Alvin, led by Singles from Annette CardenasKirstie SotoAvery Hearn, and Madysen Parker and a Walk by Britney Garcia.

Gomez earned the win for the Cougars. She allowed four hits and zero runs over five innings. Cardenas went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's to lead CBC in hits for the game. Michki, Soto, Hearn, Parker and Garcia each recorded RBI's during the Win for the Cougars. 

Following the sweep from the Dolphins, the Cougars improved to 10-12 in Region XIV play, and 25-22 overall. The Cougars set a program record for wins (25) in a season during the sweep. More importantly, CBC Softball punched their tickets to the Region XIV Championship Tournament that will be played on May 10-12 in Lufkin, Tx.


The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday, May 1st as they host Laredo Community College for a Region XIV double header. First Pitch is at 1:00 PM. Wednesday will mark the final game of the regular season.
