Cougar Softball Opens Season at Home; Goes One of Four on Weekend

Beeville, TX- Coastal Bend College softball began their season by hosting their annual Coastal Bend College Softball Classic. Alvin Community College, Cisco College and Midland College competed in the  cross-over tournament where each team played a pair of games versus teams from either Region V or XIV. For the Cougars, they had games slated against Midland College and Cisco College for both days of the classic.

In the first game of the season, versus Midland College, the Chapparals got on the board in the first inning  scoring two runs. Coastal Bend College knotted the game up at two in the bottom of the first inning.  A wild pitch allowed one run to score for Coastal Bend College.

The Chaps pulled away with three runs in the second inning and ended up scoring six runs in the fourth inning.  Tessa Ramirez was in the pitchers circle for CBC. Ramirez went three innings, allowing six runs on ten hits, striking out five and walking zero. 

Nessa Poncio and Haley Smith entered the game as relief, throwing one inning and one inning respectively. Coastal Bend College saw the ball well today, racking up seven hits in the game.  Elia Palomo and Alivia Mata-Alamillo all managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend College.  Mata-Alamillo and Palomo all had two hits to lead Coastal Bend College.

 


Coastal Bend squared off against Cisco College for their second game of the day.  Coastal Bend College asserted their will over Cisco College with convincing 9-1 victory. The Cougars got on the board in the first inning when Elia Palomo singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Coastal Bend added two runs in the second inning to create more distance from the Wranglers. 

In the second Katelynn Torres drew a walk, scoring one run and Harley Escamilla doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. CBC tallied three runs in the fifth inning.  Coastal Bend scored its runs on a home run by Makayla Wesley in the Fifth inning. 

Emma Horner led things off on the rubber for CBC. Horner lasted five innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out three.  Wesley put one out in the fifth inning.Coastal Bend College racked up nine hits.  Torres and Palomo each managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Harley Escamilla and Yadira Lopez each knocked in a Double for the game.  Wesley lead the Cougars with three RBI's, while Lopez batted in two. Palomo and Giselle Valdez both recorded one RBI during the win.


Coastal Bend College watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 8-1 loss to Cisco College Wranglers for the first game on Saturday.The Coastal Bend College struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Wranglers, giving up eight runs. 

The Wranglers opened up the scoring in the second inning with three runs and added to their lead in the fourth inning with four more runs to go up, 7-0. Nessa Poncio was in the pitcher's circle for Coastal Bend College. Poncio lasted three and a third innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out two and walking one.

Haley Smith and Isabella Gutierrez entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two and two-thirds innings and one inning respectively. Makayla Wesley, Grace Martinez, Harley Escamilla, and Yadira Lopez each collected one hit to lead Coastal Bend College. Wesley hit for a RBI Double late in the game.  Coastal Bend College was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. 


Coastal Bend College Drops to Midland College Chaparrals After Late Score. Coastal Bend College stayed in it until the end, but the Chaparrals  pulled away late in an 8-7 victory on Saturday. The game was tied at seven with Midland batting in the top of the seventh when an error scored one run for the Chaps.

Despite the loss, Coastal Bend College did collect 12 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Midland College had 11 hits on the way to victory. Coastal Bend College tallied four runs in the fifth inning. Coastal Bend College's big inning was driven by doubles by Alivia Mata-Alamillo and Giselle Valdez and a single by Katelynn Torres

Emma Horner was in the pitcher's circle for Coastal Bend College. The righty allowed eight hits and five runs over four innings, striking out four and walking one. Tessa Ramirez threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Coastal Bend College totaled 12 hits. Ashley Patterson, Torres, and Makayla Wesley all managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Patterson went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend College in hits. Katelynn Torres , Alivia Mata-Alamillo , Clarissa Morales , Giselle Valdez each Doubled for the Cougars. While Torres lead the team in Runs Batter In with three, Makayla Wesley , Alivia Mata-Alamillo , Clarissa Morales and Giselle Valdez each talled an RBI.

Next up for the Cougars will be a four game weekend series in Midland, TX. Coastal Bend will face the Midland College Chaparrals for Doubleheaders on Friday, February 11th and Saturday, February 12th.
