Cougars Spun Around by Chaparrals in Midland

Midland, TX-  Following an open week, the Coastal Bend College softball team packed their gear and headed west! The Cougars traveled to west texas for a four game series versus the Midland College Chaparrals. CBC had their eyes on improving their record, but ran into a few issues. 

Coastal Bend watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 19-3 loss to Midland for the first game on Friday.  The Chaparrals opened the bottom half of the first inning with a bang, hanging up six runs in the inning. After another scoreless frame from the Cougars, the Chaps added to their lead, this time scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. 

CBC struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Midland, giving up 19 runs while only crossing the plate three times. 

Isabella Gutierrez was in the circle for the Cougars. Gutierrez went one-third of an inning, allowing six runs on six hits and walking zero.  Emma Horner threw three and two-thirds innings in relief. Coastal Bend College smacked one home run on the day. Makayla Wesley had a homer in the fourth inning. Katelynn Torres led Coastal Bend College with two hits in three at bats. Harley Escamilla went one for three at the dish, but provided two rbi's with a Double. 


For the second game of the day, the Cougars were able to even the series up, 1-1. Katelynn Torres came into the second game of the doubleheaderand meant business, driving in four on three hits to lead the Cougars past Chaps 11-3 on Friday.  Torres drove in runs on a double in the second, a double in the fourth, and a triple in the fifth. CBC's Harley Escamilla and Elia Palomo each hit Doubles for the game. 

Coastal Bend College tallied three runs in the fifth inning.  The rally was led by a triple by Torres and a single by Ashley Patterson. Tessa Ramirez led things off on the rubber for Coastal Bend College. Ramirez allowed ten hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking zero. She would recieve the credit for the win. 

Coastal Bend scattered 16 hits in the game.  Kayla Monjares, Grace Martinez, Elia Palomo, Ariana Alcarez, Escamilla, Torres, and Patterson all collected multiple hits for CBC and produced rbi's.  Torres, Escamilla, Alcarez, and Palomo each collected three hits to lead Coastal Bend College. On the bases, CBC stole four bags, Escamilla leading the team with two while Torres and Alcarez each stole one. 


On Saturday, Coastal Bend fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 14-2 loss to Midland for the first game of the day.  The Chaparrals again jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first.

The Cougars e struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Midland, giving up 14 runs in the game Following a scoreless top half of the second inning, the Chaps added two more runs to lead CBC, 7-0.

In the top od the third inning, the Cougars finally found themselves on the scoreboard when they scored one run. Midland proceedd to scored seven runs in the third inning, taking a 14-1 lead.

Nessa Poncio was on the rubber for CBC The righty lasted two and a third innings, allowing 14 hits and 12 runs while walking one.  Isabella Gutierrez threw one and two-thirds innings in relief. The Cougars totaled seven hits in the game.  Yadira Lopez and Alivia Mata-Alamillo each had multiple hits for Coastal Bend College.  Mata-Alamillo and Lopez each collected two hits to lead Coastal Bend.  Lopez produced the only rbi of the game for CBC while hitting a Double. Coastal Bend College was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. 


Coastal Bend College fell behind early in the series finale and couldn't come back in a 10-5 loss to Midland.  The Chaparrals scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to breakup a 0-0 ball game.

The Cougars were able to trim the deficit in half by scoring one run in the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Midland added two more runs to go up, 4-1.

As the game moved to the top of the fifth inning, Coastal Bend tried to cook up something on the base paths, but only scored one run. The Chaps however were firing on all cylinders, scoring five runs to lead CBC, 9-2. 

Coastal Bend College notched three runs in the sixth inning. The offensive firepower by Coastal Bend College was led by Yadira Lopez, Kayla Monjares, and Alivia Mata-Alamillo, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. CBC cut the chaps lead to four runs, trailing 9-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth. 

The Chaps added one more run for insurance purposes to lead the Cougars, 10-5. Coastal Bend wasn't able to score in the seventh, ending the game with a 10-5 loss. 

Tessa Ramirez was on the rubber for Coastal Bend College. Ramirez went three innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out two and walking one. Emma Horner and Nessa Poncio entered the game as relief, throwing two innings and one inning respectively.Coastal Bend College socked one home run on the day. Mata-Alamillo put one out in the third inning.Coastal Bend College totaled nine hits. Alana Benitez and Mata-Alamillo each managed multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Mata-Alamillo and Benitez each collected two hits to lead Coastal Bend College.

Coastal Bend moves to 2-6 on the young season. Next up for the Cougars, the will head to Brownwood, TX for a four game set. On Friday, February 18th Coastal Bend will face Western Nebraska Community College at 12:00 PM followed by Garden City Community College at 2:15 PM. CBC will then play on Saturday, February 19th against Frank Philips College at 12:15 PM proceeded by Cisco College at 2:30 PM.
