Cougar Softball Ousted On The Road

Over the weekend, the Coastal Bend College softball team traveled to Northeast Texas for games against Navarro College and Tyler Junior College. For the first set of games, the Cougars faced the Bulldogs of Navarro College on Friday, March 4th. 

A walk-off left Coastal Bend on the wrong end of a 5-4 defeat to Navarro. The Bulldogs trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Alanna Islas homered on a 1-0 count, scoring three runs.

Coastal Bend College opened scoring in the second inning. Kayla Martinez hit a solo homer. Bryonna Dent led things off on the rubber for Navarro College Softball Bulldogs. Dent allowed six hits and four runs over two and two-thirds innings, walking one.

TessaRamirez led things off in the circle for Coastal Bend College. The righthander lasted six and a third innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out four and walking one. Coastal Bend College hit two home runs on the day.

Makayla Wesley went yard in the second inning. Martinez had a dinger in the second inning. Coastal Bend collected 11 hits on the day out-hitting Navarro in the game. 

Alana Benitez, Yadira Lopez, and Wesley all managed multiple hits for CBC. Benitez went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend in hits. The Cougars was sure-handed and did not commit a single error. 


In game two of the double-dip, the Cougars had their eyes on seeking revenge with a victory. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs had other plans. 

Coastal Bend had trouble keeping up with Navarro in a 10-4 loss. Isabella Gutierrez toed the rubber for the Cougars. The righty surrendered five runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings, walking one.

Nessa Poncio threw two and a third innings out of the bullpen. Navarro launched three home runs on the day. Alanna Islas put one out in the sixth inning. Cynthia Sizemore went for a long ball in the sixth inning. Tatum Briggs had a dinger in the sixth inning.

Katelynn Torres went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend in hits. Torres led the team in RBI's with two, while Makayla Wesley also hit in a run. Alivia Mata-Alamillo and Torres each hit a double in the game. 


Moving on to their next set of games for the weekend, the Cougars were setup to face the Apaches of Tyler Junior College on Saturday, March 5th. Coastal Bend would again find themselves in a battle versus the Apaches. 

Tyler got on the board in the second inning, scoring one run to break up the scoreless game. After holding the Cougars to another scoreless frame, the Apaches increased their lead to 4-0 as they crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the third. 

Down by four runs, Coastal Bend rallied in the top of the fourth to tie up the ball game. The tie would be brief, as Tyler produced four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to lead CBC, 8-4.

Not to be outdone, the Cougars rallied again. This time in the top of the fifth inning with five runs to take the lead 8-9. Later in the inning, the Apaches knocked in two runs to regain the lead. The Cougars fought hard for the remainder of the game but the team ran out of Outs as Tyler took game one, 10-9. 

Tessa Ramirez led things off in the circle for Coastal Bend College. Ramirez lasted four innings, allowing five hits and eight runs while striking out two. Nessa Poncio and Isabella Gutierrez entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one inning and one inning respectively.

Coastal Bend saw the ball well today, racking up 11 hits in the game. Alana Benitez, Juliana Dominguez, and Makayla Wesley all collected multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Benitez led CBC with three hits in five at bats. Benitez not only led the team with four RBI's but also knocked in two doubles.  Emma Horner, Yadira Lopez and Dominguez each recorded an RBI as well. 


For the final game of the weekend, the Cougars looked to end it on a high note with a victory. The Apaches came out swinging and spoiled that idea for CBC. 

Coastal Bend had a difficult time keeping up with Tyler in a 9-1 loss late Saturday afternoon. The Apaches got things started in the first inning. An error scored the games first run for TJC. 

Following a brief 1-1 tie in the top of the third, the Cougars quickly fell behind. The Apaches pulled away for good with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

In the third Tyler scored on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. A sac fly scored one run for TJC, and an error brought in another one run for the Apaches.

For some added insurance, TJC produced four more runs in the fourth inning. The ball game then became out of reach for the Cougars, as they fell 9-1.

Haley Smith started the game for Coastal Bend College. Smith went three and a third innings, allowing eight runs on six hits, striking out one and walking zero. Nessa Poncio threw two-thirds of an inning in relief. Ashley Patterson and Yadira Lopez each collected one hit to lead Coastal Bend College. Patterson scored the lone run for the Cougars.

The Cougars currently hold a record of 7-15. Coastal Bend will travel to Austin, TX on Tuesday, March 8th for a doubleheader versus Concordia University JV. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM at Concordia University Softball Field.
