Cougars Split Doubleheader with Bucs; Get Back On Track

Brenham, TX-  The Coastal Bend College softball program packed up their bags and hit the road to Brenham, TX. The Cougars would begin Region XIV Conference play versus the Blinn College Buccaneers on Saturday, March 12th with a doubleheader. 

Alana Benitez helped lead the way for Coastal Bend College in a 12-9 win over Blinn College on Saturday.  Benitez produced four rbi's for the Cougars; a single in the first, double in the second, single in the third, and another double in the fourth.

The Bucs took an early lead in the second inning.  Teagan Whitley drove in one when Whitley singled. Not to be outdone, the Cougars jumped on the scoreboard with two runs of their own to tie up the ball game at two runs a piece. 

In the bottom half of the second inning, Blinn regained the lead. This time the Bucs tallied up three runs to lead CBC. 

Coastal Bend College took the lead for good with eight runs in the third inning.  In the third Katelynn Torres doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run, Benitez singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs, Coastal Bend College scored on a stolen base during Juliana Dominguez's at bat. Then Dominguez doubled , driving in one, Yadira Lopez singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, and Makayla Wesley homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

The Cougars held a 10-5 lead over the Bucs after the third inning.  In the top of the fourth, CBC added another run to increase their score. 

After Coastal Bend College scored one run in the top of the seventh, Blinn College Softball answered with one of their own.  Coastal Bend College scored when Kayla Martinez doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.  Blinn College Softball then answered when Keely Castillo drew a walk, scoring one run.

Tessa Ramirez was in the pitcher's circle for Coastal Bend College. The righty allowed 18 hits and nine runs over seven innings, striking out four opposing hitters.

Coastal Bend went on to win the ball game 12-9 despite a late rally from Blinn. Ramirez would receive credit for the CBC win.

Coastal Bend College had 20 hits in the game.  Torres, Benitez, Wesley, Harley Escamilla, and Ashley Patterson all had multiple hits for Coastal Bend College.  Benitez, Wesley, Dominguez, Monjares and Torres all produced rbi's Coastal Bend College in the victory. 


The second game did not come easy for Coastal Bend, as they fell 13-4 to Blinn. CBC chalked up three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead.  Blinn then opened up an early lead in the bottom of first inning when the Bucs plated four runs. 

Coastal Bend then took a brief lead in the top of the second when they produced two runs to take a 5-4 lead. The Bucs took the lead for good with six runs in the second inning. 

In the second Chandler Talbot singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, Acie Prince doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs, Emily Kristynik homered on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs, and Kayla Wallace singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

After going up on the Cougars by five runs, the Bucs then added insurance runs in the third inning and in the bottom of the fifth to win the ball game, 5-13. 

Haley Smith started the game for Coastal Bend College. Smith went three innings, allowing 11 runs on ten hits, striking out one and walking one.  Isabella Gutierrez threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Coastal Bend collected ten hits for the contest.  Kayla Monjares and Juliana Dominguez all had multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Alana Benitez, Dominguez and Wesley all hit a double during the game.  Yadira Lopez led the team in rbi's with two, while Dominguez and Wesley each produced one rbi.
