Cougars Take Two From Visiting Seahawks

Beeville, TX-  On Saturday, March 19th, the Coastal Bend College softball team hosted the Lamar State College- Port Arthur Seahawks. Both clubs faced off for a Region XIV Conference doubleheader for their first meeting of the season. 

Cougar Pitcher, Tessa Ramirez shut down Lamar State Seahawks, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Coastal Bend College to a 2-0 victory for game one. Ramirez got the start for Coastal Bend. She lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out eight and walking one.

Though the Lamar State did out hit Coastal Bend, five hits to four; it would not be enough for a win. CBC was able to cross the plate twice in the game. Once in the bottom of the third and again in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

The pitching was strong on both sides. Ramirez struck out eight batters, while Seahawk Pitcher, Cameron Niedenthal sat down six.

Alana Benitez led Coastal Bend College with two hits in three at bats. Benitez also hit for a double. Makayla Wesley also hit a double in the game. 

Ashley Patterson and Harley Escamilla touched home plate for Cougar runs. Patterson also recorded a stolen base during the victory. 


Both Coastal Bend and Lamar State Seahawks had their offenses firing on all cylinders late Saturday afternoon, but the Cougars eventually prevailed 12-8.

The Seahawks scored quickly to begin the game, by hanging up two runs in the top of the first inning. CBC didn't back down and plated two runs to tie up the ball game in the bottom half of the inning.

Coastal Bend was able capture the lead in the second inning.  Yadira Lopez singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

Lamar State scored three runs in the top of the third inning to lead CBC, 5-3. In the bottom of the third inning, Coastal Bend College tied things up at five.  Ashley Patterson drove in two when Patterson tripled.

Coastal Bend College took the lead for good with seven runs in the fourth inning.  In the fourth Alivia Mata-Alamillo singled on a 1-2 count, scoring three runs, Harley Escamilla singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run, an error scored one run for Coastal Bend College, Alana Benitez singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, and Juliana Dominguez grounded out, scoring one run.

Haley Smith led things off in the pitcher's circle for Coastal Bend College. The righthander allowed six hits and five runs over three innings, striking out two and walking one.

Coastal Bend College totaled 13 hits in the game.  Mata-Alamillo, Patterson, Dominguez, and Lopez each collected multiple hits for Coastal Bend College. Mata-Alamillo went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend College in hits with two singles and a double while recording a game-high, three rbi's. Escamilla and Patterson both notched in two rbi's for Coastal Bend in the win. Benitez, Dominguez, and Lopez each accounted for an rbi as well. Coastal Bend College was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Grace Martinez made the most plays with five.

The Cougars improve to 11-16 overall and 3-1 in Region XIV Conference play. For their next scheduled games, CBC softball will be traveling to Lufkin, TX for a conference doubleheader versus Angelina College on Saturday, March 26th. First pitch is at 1:00 PM at Lady Roadrunner Softball Field.
