Crazy Cougar Comeback

Beeville, TX-  Though the game finished early with a run-rule, it didn't go official until late Monday, capping a WILD Region XIV - South home opener with a 15-7 Cougar victory.

The game began with the Galveston College Whitecaps showering their muscle at the plate scoring seven runs over the course of the first three innings.  Whitecaps got things started in the first inning when Asijah Hammons homered on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.  Whitecaps scored four runs in the second inning the big inning for Whitecaps came thanks to walks by Hammons and Aviana Gonzalez, a single by Zoie Garcia, and a fielder's choice by Angela Olivo.

On the verge of being run ruled, the Cougars started clawing their way back into the game scoring two runs in the bottom of the 4th, before opening the flood gates in the bottom of the fifth and six innings scoring eight and six runs respectively to flip the run-rule script back on the Whitecaps. Coastal Bend collected ten hits. Juliana Dominguez, Yadira Lopez, and Makayla Wesley each racked up multiple hits for CBC. Dominguez went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Coastal Bend College in hits.

Tessa Ramirez toed the rubber for the Cougars. The pitcher surrendered seven runs on six hits over six innings, striking out three and walking one.

Controversy arose at the conclusion of the game, when it was realized that the distance between the pitching rubber and home plate was 46' not the required 43'.  The decision was made by the school's athletic administration to not play the second game, and submit a protest on the first game.  The Region XIV Protest Committee met on Monday and ruled to uphold the Cougars 15-7 victory.

The Whitecaps and Cougars will finish their doubleheader at a time to be determined in late April or early May.
