Cougars Split with Nationally Ranked Coyotes at Home

Beeville, TX-  The Coastal Bend College softball program hosted #17 San Jacinto College on Wednesday, March 30th for a Region XIV Conference doubleheader. Both teams were strong in the circle for game one, but Coastal Bend College defeated San Jacinto College Coyotes 2-1.

Tessa Ramirez allowed just five hits to San Jacinto College. Ramirez led things off in the pitcher's circle for Coastal Bend College. The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out six.

Coastal Bend got things started in the second inning when Katelynn Torress led off with a double. CBC Right Fielder, Ashley Patterson hit a triple platting two runs on the play.

Throughout the game, San Jacinto threatened to score, but Coastal Bend was able to hold them off, leaving runners in scoring position multiple times. The Cougars also made spectacular defensive plays to keep runs off the scoreboard. 

The Coyotes scored one run late in the game to trim the Cougar lead in the top of the seventh. Fortunatley, Coastal Bend would manage to escape game one with a victory, by a game-ending pop-up.

Coastal Bend's, Katelynn Torres, Harley Escamilla, Yadira Lopez, Juliana Dominguez, and Kayla Martinez all had one hit to assist the Cougars. Torres and Escamilla both scored a run for CBC. 


As the Cougars aimed for their second victory of the day, game two leaned towards the Coyotes. The ball game was tightly contested for half of the contest, but the San Jacinto bats came alive and willed them to a 9-1 win. 

San Jacinto jumped out to a quick, 1-0 lead in the top of the first and controlled the game from there. Following a couple of scoreless frames, the Coyotes tacked on one run in the top of the fourth and another run in the top of the fifth. 

Down 3-0, heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cougars were able to get on the scoreboard by scoring a run. Coastal Bend threatend to add to their runs, but were unsuccessful.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Coyotes batted around CBC, scoring six times in the frame. San Jacinto took a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. 

The Cougars attempted to rally back into the game, but fell short. Coastal Bend scattered four hits through six innings of play but only crossed the plate once in game two. 

Coastal Bend moves to 13-18 overall and holds a 6-3 conference record. The Cougars will travel to Alvin, Tx on Friday, April 1st for a conference doubleheader with Alvin Community College. First pitch is at 1:00 PM.
