Cougars Fall 5-4 to Bossier Parish in Region XIV Championship Opener

Houston, TX- To begin the Region XIV Softball Tournament, Coastal Bend College fell behind early, but a strong comeback for the Cougars was not enough as they dropped game one. The CBC rally came up just short, as they fell 5-4 to Bossier Parish Community College Lady Cavaliers on Friday, May 13th. Coastal Bend scored four runs in a shortened comeback on a home run by Alana Benitez in the fifth, a error in the seventh, and a single by Harley Escamilla in the seventh.

The Lady Cavaliers Varsity fired up the offense in the first inning, scoring one run. BPCC took the lead early and held on tightly to it throughout the game versus a resilient Cougar team.

In the following inning, CBC's Juliiana Dominguez  hammered the ball of the left center wall for a stand-up double.  Catcher Harley Escamilla laid down a perfect sacrifice to move Dominquez to third, but the Cougars were unable to plate the run in the top of the second.

The Lady Cavs would then cross the plate twice in the bottom half of the second to extend their lead, with a single to center plating the runs.

Coastal Bend's  Alana Benitez hit a double off the wall in center field, but again the Cougars were unable to take advantage of the runner in scoring position in the top of the third inning.

During the bottom half of the third inning,  the Cavs would lace a double down the first base line scoring two runners pushing the Cavalier lead to 5-0.  A pair of infield pop-ups and Ramirez's fourth strikeout of the day brought an end to the BPCC scoring.

Moving to the top of the fifth inning, CBC's Ashley Patterson took first base on a passed ball to start the fifth inning for the Cougars and stole second on a pitchout by the Cavaliers.  Benitez put the Cougars on the board with a two run homerun over the left centerfield wall to move the score to 5-2 in favor of BPCC.

After holding the Lady Cavs to back to back scoreless frames, the Cougars were able to close the gap in the top of the seventh. Benitez got on base for the third time of the game singling between third and short to reach first.  Torres reached on a error by the BPCC second baseman.  Benitez was put out at third with a Lopez fielder's choice.  Torres was the caught at third in another fielder's choice.  Lopez scored on a single by 19 to right.  Escamilla plated Palomo with a single between third and shot to move the Cougars with in one run at 5-4.  But that is where the scoring would end, with a final score of 5-4.

Tessa Ramirez was in the circle for Coastal Bend College. The righty lasted six innings, allowing ten hits and five runs while striking out six and walking zero.

Coastal Bend College racked up ten hits in the game. Benitez and Dominguez each collected three hits to lead Coastal Bend. Benitez lead the team with two RBI's while Escamilla also knocked in a run.
