Cougars Battle Rangers, Lose at Home

Beeville, Tx-  On Wednesday evening of January 15th, the Coastal Bend College Women's Basketball team hosted Kilgore College for a conference game. The Cougars still seeking their first Region XIV win, faced a Lady Rangers team with a record of 14-3 on the season. Kilgore also held a conference record of 2-3 heading into the game with CBC.

In the first quarter, Coastal Bend trailed briefly but jumped out ahead of KC. The Cougars led as much as eight points in the frame. After the first period buzzer rang, the CBC lead was trimmed to three points, 17-20 in favor of the Navy and White. 

The second quarter took a different turn for the Cougars. Kilgore not only picked up their intensity, but scoring came along with it. The Lady Rangers outscored CBC 20-11 in the second period to take a 37-31 lead into halftime.

Looking to keep the game close in the second half, Coastal Bend made adjustments, but shots did not fall. Instead, the shots went in for Kilgore. CBC trailed KC, 52-37 after three quarters of play. 

During the final frame, Coastal Bend saw the ball go through the net more times than the previous quarter. However, on the other end of the floor, Kilgore kept a safe distance from CBC. The Lady Rangers kept pace with the Cougars in the fourth quarter, taking away a potential run to get back in the game. 

Coastal Bend ended up losing their sixth conference game by a final score of 65-51. 

CBC Guard, Marley Martinez led the Cougars in scoring with 18 points and three steals. Aubrey Guerra was the second leading scorer with 10 points. Guerra also snagged down five rebounds while recording one steal and one assist. Point Guard, Olivia Chisolm netted six points to go with her four rebounds and four assists. Post player, Tianie Johnson tallied six points and grabbed three boards for CBC. Off the bench, Jada Mitchell chipped in seven points and corralled seven rebounds to go with her three assists and three steals for the night. 


The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, January 18th as they face #4 Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Tx. The Region XIV Conference game will Tip-off at 2:00 PM in the Cardinal Gym!
