Martinez and Mitchell Spark Runs to Beat Cavs

Beeville, Tx-  Coastal Bend Women's Basketball hosted Bossier Parish Community College on Saturday, February 1st for a Region XIV Conference contest. After losing a close game to #5 Tyler Junior College a week earlier (81-78), the Cougars came out clawing for a much needed win.

The Cougars came out red hot to begin the game, scoring 29 points in the first period. CBC led the Cavaliers, 12-29. During the second quarter, CBC cooled off a bit in the scoring department, but still managed to outscore BPCC, 17-18 in the frame. 

Early in the first quarter, CBC's Marley Martinez had active hands in the passing lane, causing a steal that lead to quick two points. Martinez forced another two turnovers that lead to a layup by Aubrey Guerra, all in the matter of 30 seconds.

Mitchell had her own sequence right before halftime where she forced two turnovers that lead to a transition basket and three pointer. Coastal Bend never looked back. CBC took a 29-47 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, the Cougars picked up right where they left off, scoring another 29 points in the frame. BPCC attempted to keep pace but would be outscored by seven points in the third.

Leading the Cavs by 25 points, BPCC made a rally but ultimately fell short due to Coastal Bend's insurmountable lead. The Cougars went on to beat the Cavaliers, 73-89.

CBC Guard, Jada Mitchell lead the team in scoring with 20 points while corralling nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Aubrey Guerra netted 16 points for the Cougars going eight for eight at the charity strike. Guerra grabbed eight rebounds and recorded two steals for the game. Marley Martinez also scored 16 points to go with her two rebounds, two assists and five steals. Post player, Tianie Johnson came up huge off the bench with double-double performance. Johnson tallied 10 points and recorded 11 rebounds for the contest. 


The Cougars will be back in action as they host Jacksonville College on Wednesday, February 5th. Tip-Off for the Region XIX Conference game will be at 5:30 PM in the Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center.
